Got a free Edelbrock 2102 ..to use or not to use
Hello, i've just aquired (finally) a 72 350...i know the heads are like 988 castings or something like that ... 1.94 valve....but anyway.... the guy I bought it from gave me a cam with it.. NEW... its an edelbrock 2102 204/214 i think... now to me that sounds like a weak cam.. but..... should i use it????
I want noticible idle.....and a stall converter at about 2400 stall...
should i just scrap this cam and get something like ...224/224..??
I also have 3.73 instead of the 4.11
is it worth it to get a bigger cam..than the edelbrock????
I just dont want to get the motor all set and have a peanut cam in there...??? thats if it is a peanut cam.. i dont know...
anyone have this cam??

by the time you get a 305 to have a rumpety-rump idle, you are going to give up the torque that the 305 was built for. Mixing a high rpm cam with a low rpm bore/stroke ratio is kind of a mismatch. true rumpety rump cams don't start until 240+ (@ 0.050) anyways.
i'd stay around 215-225 on the 0.050 duration if I was you.
and yes, that tiny little 204/214 is not going to do the trick.. sell it or donate it to a stock rebuild.

A comp 262XE should give you a nice lopey idle, I think. This is a good cam I hear for 305s.
I used to have a sound clip of my cam, but not anymore.

before the 406 buildup for my 71 camaro, i was running a 350 with a 226/226 generic cam in it (from summit i think). It pulled great to about 5500rpm, idled nicely at 700rpm (about 15" vacuum), and had a good exhaust sound (no rumpety-rump lope but it did sound good).
i think comp makes a 224/230.... or something like that. i'd say go with anything in the mid 220's for a carb'd 350. and get a performer rpm intake to compliment it.

I have a comp 280H. It's 230/230 @.050 and .480/.480 lift. It has a noticable idle and makes good power at 5,500 rpm. From what I understand the 280H has most noticable idle you will get with a cam that small.

Stock Idle
The Edelbrock 2102 cam and 2101 manifold will give good low end and a super smooth idle. I like it in my 305 (the engine came this way in my car) Chevy powered'78 Cutlass, but you won't like it if you're building an engine and want a lopey idle.

That 2102 is a nice cam for a 305, close specs to a melling MTC-1 that make gobs of end power over a stock cam. If you want a noticleable idle your goning to have to go for a higher duration cam, even a comp 270H doesnt have a lopy idle unless you back the timing way down and you dont want to do that.
