With stroking and boring, I'm sure you can get quite close to a 400.

400 would be good. Yeah I meant to say what is the biggest you could get by boring and stroking it.

really depends on how much jack you have to drop in it. 4" is pretty straight forward 4.125 or even 4.25 with an aftermarket block. do you want to fill it with grout? if so that would allow you room to grind more clearance into it. also rod to cam clearance becomes an issue, but like most things there are ways to get around it. what do you have in mind or was you just asking for gernal info?

Just in general, seeing what my options are. I want something besides a 383, cause that's what everyone has. Looking for something bigger. I was going to get a new block anyway, so I could always get a bigger block than a 350.

Well, a 383 is when it is bored .030 over, just go to .040 over to be "different".

Haha! That really would be different. I want to be different, but still have all the perks of the sbc.

I don't think being different is building a 350SBC and strokin/borin it to get cubes.

Now a 327 on the other hand is a bit different.

I am going to assume you weren't trying to be a d!ck by saying that.

95% of people who have something other than a 350 have a 383. I'm not asking for your opinion, I'm just wondering what my options are.

I am also considering getting a 400.

396 is about the biggest people go with. Thats bored .030" over and a 3.875" stroke. (383 is 3.75" stroke). You could bore it .060" over instead. If you get a 400 block, you can go 4.125" bore and 3.875" stroke for 420 cubic inches ( I think ).

I like the idea of the 400. Its 50 more inches than I have now! You can never have too much displacement...

I didn't want to mention it earlier cause I wasn't sure of the #, but I thought my borther had a 406 or something in his 84 Camaro once. bored .120 over, yes .120. and stroke I assume.

Speed-O-Motive lists a 397ci stroker motor with 4.060" bore, 3.835" stroke, and 5.7" rods. The rod ratio of this motor is 1.48 and the deck height is 9.025. I haven't found the ad yet, but it seems that Cat was producing a stroker kit for the 350 that offset ground the rod journals to the small journal size and they were getting 411 ci or something very close to that. I will do more research and get back to you.

That is the truth. If money is no object, i just got done building a 487 inch smallblock. It makes close to 1000 hp, NA. Was not cheap however.. A more realistic big smallblock is a 434. Easy 800+ hp, and not quite as much $$$$$

What is a 427? Stroked 400 or is it a different bore also? I realize that 434's are stroked and bored 400 blocks. And also while we are at it, what is the bore and stroke of a 396 big block?

The 427 is 4.25" bore x 3.76" stroke (standard and tall decks)
400 is 4.125" x 3.75"
396 is 4.096" x 3.76"
454 is 4.25" x 4.00"

Oh and a correction to a previous post: 4.125" bore and 3.875" stroke only yields 414 c.i.d.

Here is what happens when you take a stock 400 block, bore it .030, add a Callies 4.00 stroke crank, Oliver 6.00 rods, and JE 13.5:1 pistons-(434 CI). Watch for the fan belt-new deep groove pullies are now installed-the MSD pill is 7K.

434 85 Z28

The 4.25" bore 427 is a big block. Sorry for the confusion.
