Anyone out there with a stroked 406. (Engine options)
Hey
I am planning on getting a new engine for the IROC this winter. Im not sure what I am going to do yet, there are so many options.
I might keep with the 305 and add all the goodies.
I would like a built 350 tpi that puts out around 325 rear wheel HP.
I was also thinking of a 383 stroker.
And now I heard of the stroker 406.
The IROC is going to be a daily driver with the new engine and I am looking to run pump gas. I am looking to run 10.1 compression or so.
I am thinking that the 406 would be too big for a street car.
Tell me what u guy think I should do.
I am looking to put out around 325 rear wheel HP...380ft/lbs.
Tell me the best way to go.
Thanks alot

the 406 is a .030 overbored 400 and built with the right heads an things will give you what you are looking for without having to rev it up to 6000 rpm, they are known to be torque monsters which will make a fun to drive street car. there is no replacement for displacement !!!!!!

Now how much would it cost to get a 406.
Would it be around the same price as a 383 stroker. I know that the 350 would probley be the cheapest.

"406" is not a "stroker, it's a stock motor that's had some routine maintenance done to it. It makes more sense to call it what it really is, which is a 400.
Cost of a "406" = the cost of a junk 400 core that needs boring, plus boring .030" over, pistons, rings, etc. all of which are the same as a 350. Of course I haven't the vaguest idea what a 400 core would cost in your area, or how easy they are to find; where I've been when I wanted one, I've never had any trouble getting them, for around $250 for a complete short block. YMMV
It's always cheaper to rebuild a stock motor than it is to make some non-stock hybrid like a 383.
If you want 325 RWHP, you better look somewhere besides TPI. It simply doesn't flow that much. HP = work divided by time, that is, the time rate of doing work; work comes from burning gasoline; burning gasoline requires air; flow = amount of air per time; therefore the HP limit of a given engine is its flow capacity. Add enough fuel to be burned in that amount of air, it's a simple matter to calculate the HP within about 5% without knowing anything more about the motor than just that.

406 is a 400 block bored .030 over, not stroked.
I forget how you derive a 415ci,
You can go to a 3.850 crank to get a 421 or 427 small block stroker but you are talking about a very expensive motor due to matching low availablity parts.
I went the other way and destroked a 400 block to 375 ci using a .020 over 400 block and 3.48 crank from a 350, turns 7500 rpm on flat tappet cam and my buddies identical bottom end turns over 9grand on the street with a crower roller cam and matched brodix heads and intake, again pricey.
you can easily acheive your hp goals with a 383 stroker or even a 350, which in my opinion is a better rounded motor, I'm not too stoked on my 383 (In the other car)
Basically, with under 500 hp you are fine with iron crank and non exotic rods and pistons.
10 to one compression leaves you with a good cam and head/ exhaust flow, 325RWHP is doable
the 355 is probably the cheapest way to go

Cool
Thanks alot. I heard a guy say that he had a 406 stroker, It didnt think it was a stroked 406 because I have never heard of one. I just thought id ask.
Well I will most likely be going with the 350 and a.30 overbore making it a 355.
Has anyone out there built a 355. How much did it cost u and what kinda rear wheel numbers are u making.
With around 325hp and 390ft/lbs what would the 1/4 mile time be around. Im thinking 13s.
