The camaro is DEAD. Everyone, wear your seatbelts and learn from this

Im sure most everyone on this board already knows the story but...............here's a quick rundown of the disaster. Nina was driving her Camaro RS home from the illegals Friday night, 5SIZ (Sergio) and Synapsis were driving in front of her on Kolb, I was following behind her in Nates Corvette, she was going the speed limit (50mph) and the back tires locked up. I didn't think she'd wreck, I thought she'd just skid into the curb, but she sorta lost it and the car went into a spin, and she hit a concrete barrier and tree full on at 50 mph. The car was almost completeing a 180 spin so it hit on the driver side door, rear quarter panel. I ran out of Nates car towards the camaro expecting to see two dead people in the car (my girlfriend Nina and her friend in the passenger seat) because the wreck was THAT bad. The driver seat was smashed into nothing, the driver side door was pushed all the way in almost touching the center consule, and completely covering the steering wheel. The girl in the passenger seat was sitting on the ground directly next to the passenger seat, knocked out, Nate came and grabbed her and put her into the corvette (its his girlfriend). Nina was laying almost on the centerconsole and stupid me I just picked her up and moved her to the passenger seat without knowing if her neck was broken. The most horrifying thing was that I witnessed the entire wreck directly in front of me from less than 100 ft away. The ambulances came and took them away. The other girl was OK just had a concusion, but Nina had a broken arm, bruised femur, and was just banged up real bad all over her body. Even so they were SOOOOOOOO lucky, because they were wearing their seatbelts. If they hadn't worn their seatbelts they would both be dead, no doubt. Nina has a huge road rash in her neck and hip from the seatbelt because of the extreme force.

YES the rearend had welded gears, and YES I blame myself and I've kicked my own *** a couple times already. Stupid, SO ****ING stupid of me to install ghetto parts on a girls car, it would be fine for my car but not on hers. Oh well **** happens I guess. Aside from the hood and hopefully the motor under the hood, the car is a TOTAL and complete loss. All four rims were twisted and bent, I think 3 of the tires were torn to pieces, every panel on the car from the fenders back is screwed beyond belief, the hatch glass, front windshield and all the glass in the entire car instantly shattered on impact, and their is a huge hole in the floor where the brake/gas pedals used to be. Oh, and there is no driver side anymore since it got smashed into the size of a single passenger car. Damn. I won't even begin to say how much work and sweat I'd put into that car, cuz right now the important thing is my girlfriend is still alive, but its still just sad as hell. Just before the wreck, I had raced a 79 Trans Am (350 chevy, super victor intake, demon carb, super comps, ect..) and beat the crap out of him. Car was running peeerrrfect, woulda hit 13's easy, I'm sure of it. Had a new exhaust with chrome pipes and a new cat intalled JUST the same day, was showing it off to everyone at the illegals, my girlfriend was happy because she finally had a quiet fast car. Damn sucks. Just a lesson for everyone, seatbelts work, and thirdgens don't hold up for **** in side impact wrecks, so drive safe. I'm going to the tow yard on Monday to bring that smashed heap of metal back to my parents house and see what, if any is salvigable, I know the motor is good though. New 350 just installed like a month ago.

What really pisses me off is the cops that showed up INSTANTLY started telling me that the driver was drunk and was racing one of us. ****ING *******S. I was soo pissed. No matter what we said they were convinced that because it was a red camaro with stripes driving near other V8 cars, it MUST have been a drag race, it wasn't conceivable that parts on a car could just fail. GRRRRRRr. I hate cops now more than ever. I'm sure we'll be getting a nice gift package in the mail in form of tickets on Monday. **** the police.

Aww man that really sucks to hear At least everyone came out of it ok and there were no losses besides the Camaro. The important thing to remember is that cars can be replaced but lives cannot. Feel lucky that the most critical thing was not loss. Sorry about what about though and I wish everyone a speedy recovery.

glad there's no human casualties...at least you have a reason for your car being wrecked, mine was stolen and pointlessly vandalized then returned to me by petty thieves I don't even know!

I hope this post will save other people's lives if they can learn from this.......don't use welded gears or other shotty suspension, brake, chassis parts

you should be glad you never got a chance to push 13s with a rear end in that condition!

Welded gears means that the spider gears inside the carrier have been welded together in 4 places so that it effectively creates a "spool" type setup and both rear tires are locked in place for full time posi. The problem with this as opposed to a spool, is that there are MANY parts that can break, for instance one or two of the weldes could crack and parts of the spider gears could go flying into the rotating parts in the rearend possibly causing it to lock up against the case. I think in my instance the dowel pin that holds the carrier in dropped through and locked against the case. Believe you me, I will never install welded spiders in my cars again.

I'm very glad that everyone survived the crash...but this is why it says on the box and in the catalogues "for drag use only. Not for street applications". Not trying to be a jerk...this is an important example of why we should heed those warnings.

Like I said, I admit responsibilty, all I can say in my defense is that it was a FREAK accident because I drove around in my Grand prix for over a year with twice as much HP as the camaro had with welded gears and nothing ever happened.

I helped organize and SCCA rally here last February. The whole town was pumped, the event prolly doubled the yearly income of that town. The cops were dicks about it tho.

We had one team in a real bad crash on the 3rd stage. So as the helicopter was flying the driver out, what does John Wayne police officer do? Gives the guy a damn ticket...a C&I no less.

I'm happy to hear your friends are ok, cops are **** I agree. Can anyone tell me what they are "serving and protecting"

...sorry, that stuff bothers the hell out of me.

Glad to hear your girl and her friend are okay. They probalby did a blood test at the hospital and found out that they weren't drinking. Hope it all works out. And if it doesn't, you might want a laywer.. the busted gears in the axle are some damn good proof that there was nothing illegal going on.

Uhhhh, how many of you were there when that happened? And how many cops were there? Yeah, let them prove you guys were racing when it happened. If we have any officers on the board, then I'm sure your minds are different, but I think it is drilled into their heads that if there is an accident involving a car with anything bigger than a 4cyl., then someone was racing, and lost it. Is it possible to e-mail police departments with complaints, and actually have them read? We need to start that. We could do it nicely, but so much so that maybe their server would lock up.

I am glad to hear everyone is alive with minimal injuries, given the wreck they where in. I hate to defend the police because I know I am going to get bashed for it, but I will anyway. If you saw as many wrecks, corpses, body parts, and gore as these guys see on a daily basis, you might understand their anger. I know for a fact that a large amount of the bodies they cut out of twisted metal are caused by either alcohol and f'n around. Is it wrong to imply everyone in a bad wreck is doing that? Yes. Would it **** you off to see wasted lives, usually young ones, day after day. I would have to think so. Just my 2 cents.

I understand better, the mood the officers were probablr in, but they should never assume that they were doing that. Just to assume, and then force the issue, would **** me off to no end. I could understand if they checked for sobriety right away, or asked if any racing was going on, but to come out and accuse someone of that, seeing that he would have already been upset about the accident, and his g/f getting hurt, that would have set me off. But you do have a point, cops see a lot more dead bodies in a year, than I ever hope to see in my life. They need to learn when to not say certain things.

Thanks for all the sympathy guys. Good news is that my girlfriend is doing better and can walk around now without limping much. I got the car from the tow yard today.............DAMN, in the daylight it looks MANGLED. I''ll post pics tommorow, you guys won't believe somebody survived it. I busted *** and got the engine/tranny/exhaust system out (which is amazing that the new 3inch exhaust system survived save for the tweaked chrome tips) and I put money down on an 85 Trans Am WS6 with 16inch rims that has a new 700R4, I'll just drop this driveline minus the tranny into that car and swap in my 3.42 open diff rear I have sitting at my parents house. It won't be quite as good as the camaro, but she says she always wanted a Trans Am anyways!

glad to here everyone is doing ok. about the drag racing, If the cops didnt witness it then they have no right to give you a ticket for it. It wont stand up in court.

I was in a wreck once and the cop asked if I had been drinking. I said "Dr. Pepper", he got pissed and gave me a ticket.

I wasnt trying to be a smart ***, I was just answering the question.

Ahh...I see. We get 12 points in AL as well. Our six point offense is called Wreckless Driving. Street racing (whatever it's official name is) and DUI are worth 12.

Hey guys, well that sure is a nasty wreck and i'm glad to hear everyone is ok from it. On the topic of nasty wrecks and wearing your seatbelt here's one for ya. A good friend of mine was driving his 83 TA down the street doin the speedlimit (35-40) after it had rained that night, and was goin around a turn and the front right wheel locked up on him. It pulled him into the bushes on the side of the road, hit a tree at the front left headlight, did a 180 and flipped him upside down and landed that way. He was barely able to crawl out the back hatch. There isn't a straight peice of metal on the whole car, and he didn't get a bruise on his body with the exception of 3 stiches on his arm where the windsheild glass went through his wrist when it broke. When he sat in his car again after the crash, the roof was so smashed down that your head would stick through the t-top. He is extremely lucky to not only be barely injured, but to be alive at all. I swear, i'm convinced that if you take good enough care of these cars, they'll protect you through anything.
