All those with Vortec setups please read!

I am building an engine out of an 88 Iroc. My friend is selling me his ported vortec heads. My question is, who here is running a vortec setup, what other parts do you have (cam, etc.), and how much power are you making??? This will help me decide which direction to go. Thanks!!!

I drove a friend's car with Vortec heads on it and they are for sure the best flowing iron head for the money. Don't forget the springs won't take more than .490 inch, and they have small pockets...also need to have the top of the valve guides shaved. I'm building a 5.7 Vortec 350 for my '84 T/A with an LT4 hot cam, performaer Vortec intake, and TES headers, since that combo is supposed to put out around 380 HP, more if I went with an RPM and better carb!

I have ported vortec heads and a comp xe268 cam. Check my sig. I figure I'm making at least 400 hp.

I havent gotten my car running just yet because I'm waiting on the machine shop to finish the heads but...

Same heads on a full-weight Monte SS, old-school Edelbrock RPM cam, 3.73s, 3000 stall, suspension/slicks = 12.6-12.8 on motor all day long. With a 150 shot it was in roll-bar territory.

I hope with my better setup I can run in that same area (I HOPE!)

I guess I might have around 400 ponies, don't really know, all I got to go are some pretty decent times. GOing to a 1000cfm tb, with multi point FI. Hoping for about 430HP

check my sig. With this combo and a smaller cam, and unported vortecs chevy hi performance made 440HP, so I'm guessing I'm somewhere above 450HP. Runs awesome right now, just put on a 870 proform HP style main body today, now its finally got enough air to keep up with the ponies!

just checked your sig.......you don't still have that blue racer cam in there do you?? If so I'd say that peanut is killing your top end power. Vortecs LOVE cams with lots of duration and a medium amount of lift. I experimented with like 5-6 different cams ranging from 218@.050, .450 lift, to the current 244@.050 .510 lift cam till I found the optimum power maker. Just food for thought.

Your right, now that I've ditched the th700 and stock converter,
it's hurtin' for a bigger stick.

I've had one in stock that I'm curious to try,
it's still mild, (for some peoples tastes) but a step in the right direction.

It's a Comp cs270B-6 solid That I removed from a 2bbl dirt motor
Specs are 235/242@.050" .495'/.507" Likes tight lash setting
Going to try 1.6 intake rockers to. Should be a nice improvement
from 3000 rpm up and put the car solidly in the 12's....

I also have some Budget heavily ported and shaved 305 heads
to try. Just for grins..... Got good numbers on the flow

bench. Then this motor is coming out for a more serious Vorteced 406. The comp XE284H is a stick I was looking at, for it.
Should be done soon.

That 'lil old Blue Racer is a very versitile cam. lots of power to 5500+
but easy manors. It has served me well.

My specs are below. I love the way the car runs. I am waiting for my timing tape to come in from Scoggin-Dickey, then I can set my timing more precisely. I am thinking of going to a Proform body after the good words ChrisFormula had to say. I am running 67/74 jets, 31/32 nozzles. I want to run the nozzle down on the primary side. Maybe if I get the Proform body, it will flow enough air to mix better with the fuel. I haven't been able to get out and run the car lately as I just bought a house in town, and the plates are expired, and I don't have exhaust on it yet. I want to run it one good time so I will have a difference to document after I put on the twin turbos.

I gained a solid 1 tenth with the proform main body. Probably more if I did some more tuning.

check my sig.

I tuned to a best mph of 101.8 but only ran 14.2's that day. my tires are toast now. 2.6 60's

for comparison,
LS1's at our elevation run 97-98 mph

with my XE262 cam I have good power from 1500rpms, destroys my tires.
