85 carbed 305 mostly stock except small tube headers. Runs great.

I do know a guy who has a set of large valve heads for a 305 he was gonna put on a 350 but not sure on the price or if they are worth it.

all I got in mind is a intake and cam, build my own q-jet, it already has small tube headers. Might change the rod n main bearings.

So cam choice is all i got left.

here is my new intake

"I won it on ebay for 56 bucks, 19 shipped.

Not sure about the cam they recommend with that intake???

http://www.weiand.com/HiOctn/ProdLi...ECC/Chevy4.html

it a street strip cam but say rpm range 1000-4800

So Cam me plz. who why and which one should I pick up.

the guy at crane recommended part # 12242-2 (268) and 12238-2 (262)

he said I could use either in the 305, but when i told him I had lower gears he went with the 262 for some reason

comp pm 260 vr crane xe 262

crane cam 113901 and comp 12238-2
at .004 lift, the crane cam has 260/272 duration
at .006 lift, the comp cam has 260/272 duration
@ .05 lift, the crane has 204/216 duration
@ .05 lift, the comp has 218/224 duration
crane has 112 deg lobe separation
comp has 110 deg lobe separation
max lift for crane is .427/.454
max lift for comp is .462/.469
the lift @ .050 for crane is .107/.117
the lift @ .050 for comp is .318/.320 - big difference

well where I think it counts, 2-3500 rpm is where its won or lost, the comp 262 is the winner.

There is only a 2 or 3 hp difference with those cams. That's a wash because every engine is a little different.

No advantage either way.

yea only a tad better but also a tad cheaper. I defended your 260 choice to the hilt but I did not run any of the test. friend did. and the number look better there and in drag 2000.

if you have icq you and my friend can go round and round. you both talk a good talk.

There are certain other things you should consider as well, which I don't know the answer to in your situation.

-rear gears

-transmission

-heads

-intake, etc.

I would say "Sure, go with the XE 262" if you had 3.73 gears and a 2500 rpm torque converter, or a standard tranmission.

Tell me what you have. I'm running a stock 1400 rpm converter and 3.42 gears. For my combo the Crane is superior because I don't need to resort to a high stall unit and I can run it all winter long.

I'm just astounded at how well that Crane grind, using such conservative lift and duration, compares to the XE 262. They are virtually identical!

OK, all your stuff looks good. Just do your porting and polishing, it's not hard so don't stop at gasket matching. Also, enlarge that intake valve out to 1.94". Then run whichever cam you fancy. I'm not going to be dogmatic about it. It's your car and I doubt that you get -40* in the winter!

Enlarging the intake valve must be done by your machine shop. They'll grind it out that extra .10" and fit a new set of valves to it, too.
