Best Cam for under $300

What is the best cam for an L98 for under $300. I'm looking at a 1500-5000 rpm range and I want to keep stock lifters, ECU, and headers for now. I will bet getting 2400 RPM stall converter with this cam. I am looking at a crane cam powermax roller with a 208/214 duration and .438/.452 lift. It sells on SummitRacing.com for 260. If anyone has this cam or one with similar duration, what kind of power gains does it give? how many RWHP/torque? Thanks

LT4 hot cam, average price around 170-175, will accept all stock hardware, and with 1.5 rockers will give your around .492 lift. Or check out comp cams, they run about 30 bucks cheaper than Crane.

Yeah, if you want a civilized idle then go Crane. They generally have a wider LSA. Though Comp has more choice in the field you are looking at, they are all rather more radical lift-wise than the Crane.

If you are wanting to keep costs down and use your current springs and whatnot, the Crane looks good.

The HOT cam will slow down a TPI car with anything near stock induction. Don't go that route unless you plan on significant runner & base changes, and you're ready to do some PROM burning.

I'd recommend the Comp "302" grind, 264HR-12. Replace your valve springs, they need it anyway, and your worn-out stock garbage will keep you from getting the full benefit of any cam you put in there.

The Crane cam you mention is almost the same as your stock L98 one; not enough difference to be worth the trouble of making the change.
