I was told there was but I have never heard of anything like this. I kind of doubt it myself. What are they going to do pull you over and whip a dyno out of the trunk. Its like hey guys look, I just got a ticket for 1200 hp. Anyway, I just wondered because I had never heard of anything like this. I live in Illinois by the way.

I'm pretty sure you are right since I heard that in Texas there is no limit (I'm assuming in others there is....)

I think japan has a limit to where a car can only make 280hp MAX!!!
but then again that is stock
in idaho I heard the limit is 500hp
but you know I don't really understand it
take that 500hp and put it in a 73 caddy and it might move fast but then again think of that 500hp in one of the orig mini's
who do you think would be faster ????
if they are goig to put a limit I think a hp/lb would be better then max hp
either way though a limit like that sux gnats *** dude

I don't believe the Federal Government has any standard for max HP and they (the fed gov) are the ones who matter to the auto manufacters. However I think the automakers have some unwritten rules of how far they will go, looking at the safety and liability issues. They leave the insanity to the aftermarket tuners.
And on the Japan issue, I'm pretty sure the Skyline GT makes a lot more than 280hp in stock trim. Those cars were killer when I was in Japan in 82 thru 84. The new ones are awesome and would really help the ricers if ever imported in numbers to the U.S. They were about the only car that could beat my 77 Celica GTV, 2000 DOHC, twin carbs, header, 5spd. The car used to eat in-line 6 equipped Fairlady Z's. (240/260Zs)

as for the skyline not having more then 280hp
I agree
that car is HEAVY
but from what I understand 280 is max hp stock from the factory there in japan
but who's to say that nissan doesn't underate there hp figures so they can make the car

and boy do I wish they would bring more of there cars over here even with there whole "276hp" and since that 276hp can turn a car that tips the scales at 3400-3800 in what the low 13's high 12's (the skyline that is) least I am guessing that is the number it pulls
I wouldn't mind having one

Ok, I'm pretty sure the skyline doesn't come FACTORY making 1000hp, but I never saw that episode. And I don't think japan has a limit either, they rate their cars around that much hp for insurance reasons. The Evolutions say around 270 hp I think, but it's realy making around 330-350.

Yeah, in Japan there was an 'agreement' between the automakers to limit the rated horsepower to 280. Note that I said 'rated' horsepower. That's why the US spec 300ZX TwinTurbo made 300hp, while the JDM spec car made 276. Guess what? There's no difference in the motors

And here is big Tom talking about it.
"Do you need a car like this? Well, no. But do you want a car like this? Oh baby, more than anything else in the world!"

The one in the picture is an R33. Notice that the steering wheel is on the wrong side. It is either a fake or has been modified. The skyline is a japan only car right now. The vielside is not sold by the factory but by vieldside its self. It is just an option available at dealers.

Here in australia at least in New South Wales We have a CI to weight ratio that you can't exeed. For example you can't even
put a 302 cleveland in any car weighing(around)less than 2600lbs.There is a formula but i can't remember it at this time.
I think this law is too extreme.
P.S off the subject but it is even ilegal to run nitrous here.

Is it legal where I live? I dunno. But I'll be mounting the bottle in the spare tire area anyway.

I know veilside is a big tuner and makes a lot of body kits for cars including the one for the F&TF RX-7
it might be something like the callaway vette
taking a fact car and then retuning it then selling it out

Veilside is a tuner just like AMG is a tuner for mercedes. Nissan gives them lots of support but it is not a factory car. We do actually get the skyline sort of. Either lexus or Infinity (which ever is owned by nissan) has one of their mid cars that is based on the same platform, but unfortunatly doesn't get the awd or the 6cyl. As for the left hand drive that has to be a modification that was done state side because there are no, absolutly no, left hand drive skylines from the factory. They are sweet cars though. As for hp limits i have never heard of one in the US. Oh and for Nitros, missouri allows it to be in the car and functional but the valves have to stay closed. So aslong as you don't race a cop or purge in front of one you're fine.

you are absolutly right, there is no factory left hand drive skyline gtr 's made, they are japan exlusive. but there are 4 door skylines that are rear wheel drive that are sold in japan and in some europiean countries. but we are suppose to get the next body style skyline (r35 or s35 depending on which manufacture gets it) as a nissan or infinity! nissan is doing the right thing, they are bringing back rear wheel drive, the next maxima is suppose to be based off of a rwd infinity, the 350 Z will be good comptition for the f-body and stang, and if the skyline is brought over it would be Z06 comptiton. the supra is going to be brougth back and it will have over 340 hp. there will be some fun to drive cars coming over in the next few years.
as for veilslide, they are not affiliated with the factory, the purchase, modify, and sell the cars through selected dealers. id rather have a GTR V-SPEC 2 tuned by NISMO than a veilslide though.
but i would really like to be able to drive my iroc
soon very soon:hail: :hail: :hail:

1000 HP, that is all...?
This car would take out the Skyline, I would bet every thing on it.
0-60 in 1.2 sec and an est. top speed of 265 mph!

I would not worry so much about the legality of it, but if your insurance company gets wind of excessive HP than it’s pay time.
I know the insurance companies are friends with manufactures, and your local law. Therefore, that being said I would look squarely at the big insurance companies as being the culprits behind such laws.

I was just reading your sig................you DO realize a 350 and a 305 have the SAME EXACT crankshaft.........right??? I have a friend that thinks he is "stroking" his motor by installing a 350 crank in his 305, it took me and vadim hours to convince him otherwise!

Same stroke, but the counter wieghts are a bit different.
So he's basicly going to pay for some extra balancing - for nothing
Lord help him if he doesn't get it balanced

Actually, his sig doesn't make much sense. It says 305 (bored 307). Well a .030 over-bored 307 gives ~310/311 ci. If you then stick in a 350 crank, then you have ~333 ci. So, starting from a 307, a 350 crank is a stroker, but it doesn't give 305 ci.

I dont know, it would have to be like a .015 overbore or something(just guessing) to make a 307 out of a 305. I also dont see the point in the 350 crank.

hmm, Yea, I remember when I was young hearing about "the fastest street legal car", or "most legal HP"... Kinda like boasting about 0-60 times, and top speed as being the only thing important about how fast a car is.... ahh, back in the days of ignorance

and anyway half the "Street legal" high horsepower cars are not street legal.
one of the biggest is smog related stuff that isn't there. and even if you don't have inspections doesn't mean it is legal.

Pretty much. When I was in UTI my street performance instructor had what he called a "street legal" 9 second Mustang. 9 seconds it may have been, and it did have legitimate (though 2 years outdated) Texas tags, but it was FAR from actually being street legal.

That would make a Corvette Z07 and a handful of other cars illegal then? I have a real problemn with that kind of "data."
Correct. The insurance companies, however, are a different story. They cannot directly make any laws regarding it, but they can certainly set premium rates at a prohibitively high point to discourage it. Anyone remember 1971?
