Really Stupid Guy, Easy Sensor Question...
my fan doesnt kick on when the car hits 220 degrees, i can turn the ignition on, put max ac on, and the fan kicks on, so i assume it is the fan switch(i went to advanced and got some little thing with a plug on it that he says when it warms up it grounds out making the fan kick on, so i got a new one of those), but i however have NO idea where this goes at all...
1992 Camaro 305 TBI Auto Stock, need all the help you can give me, im very car stupid, so good descriptions are a plus...

ok, i found the sensor, anti-freeze is gonna shoot out of that hole when i change that out isnt it ?
also, the plastic booty that fit around that to hold the little metal thing in the tube, crumbled when i took it off (185,000 miles prolly took care of that), where or what can i do to fix it ? i really dont wanna drive around with the AC on max so my fan is on all the time...

Don't think that sensor is the one you need to change. There is another sensor on the thermostat housing that the cpu uses. The one on the head is for your guage. I'm not 100% sure this is right on your TBI but that is how it is on the carbed models.

i fixed it, it was that sensor that is showed on the picture there, the fan kicks on now, but the little needle metal that fits into there is loose because the plastic boot crumbled when i took it off, car is funtioning, fan is kicking on, everything is working fine, i just need to know the part number to replace the boot so i dont worry about the wire falling out all the time...

I know the plug, but I couldn't tell you what part number it is. At NAPA they usually have a big display full of GM connectors, that's where I go when I need something like that..Like my TPS connector.

I had a hell of a time finding that wiring connector, I went to a chevy dealership and they pulled the diagrams and couldn't find it in theyre computer. tell them you need the connector for the high pressure switch on the A/C compressor, they can find that easier in the computer. I think they cost around $6.00 or so. all you have to do is cut the old one off and splice the new one on.

Name of the plug? "Radiator Fan Switch male-end connector"

No, He went back to NC.--(lesson here, log off your websites when mouthy relatives come over) Now I gotta deal with comment's like that, and not from just this site, but hey at least he wasn't downloading ****. I hope.
Anyway, I checked it out and sure enough, the 89 has one on the passenger side head, but the 86 does not. Also my 89 has dual fans while the 86 has only a single fan.... learn something new everyday.

Man go to a junk yard! What would they charge, a Dollar? My Dad's fan sensor broke and he called the dealer ship here in Dallas. They wanted 27 bucks. Luckly I had one on a spare manifold. Ha he broke that one when puting it on. Well some how he getto riged it on there with out the black plastic clip.

No! Don't get it at the dealer! Sounds like I was too late though. Pep Boys carries that pigtail under the name a/c compressor pigtail (1986redbird said it already). It is in the "HELP" section, sort of near the selection of GM weatherpack connectors that they sell. Just hanging there on the shelf costing less than ten bucks. I'm thinking the part number is 85410 or something similar. Well, at this point I guess this is just for future reference since you already ordered one.

thanks for trying to help me out before i gave my left arm to the dealer , but i already paid for it, and the nearest pep boys is going to cost me the amount in gas that GM ate me up for anyways...
im at work today, my mom got me the part, im gonna drop it on tonight and hope all goes well!
well, if anything, im learning how cars work as the stuff breaks on mine

Ok not all went as planned, the GM guy shipped the sensor and not the connector, so they had it in stock, and only costed me $8, so anyways, i spliced the wire, and the fan still doesnt kick on at 220? I can put it on Max AC and the fan kicks on, im sure i got a good connection on the wire, and the sensor is new, so what else can be going on here?

Try touching the wire that connects to the switch to the block.. If the fan still doesn't come on, the problem is in the wiring somewhere. You're gonna have to trace that wire down to where it splices into the fan relay wire. Maybe a burned wire? If it does come on, then the switch is the problem. Maybe they gave you a bad switch? Or the body of the switch isn't fully grounded (too much teflon tape?). You said earlier that it was all working fine, did that include coming on at 220°? What are you going by, the dash gauge? Did you hook up a scantool and check out the temp on that? The temp on a scantool (read from the intake manifold near the thermostat) is typically 5-12 degrees cooler than the temp at the head where the switch is, but at least it's digital.

You can make a 20amp fused jumper like I did for about 5 or 6 bucks. Buy a "extra circuit" at the autoparts store for about 3$. Its a 20a fuse in a cylinder with wires on each end. Hook alligator clips to each end. Them use a nail in the clip if you need to stick it into something (like the fan connector) or the clip if you need to hook onto a terminal or something. Then disconnect the wire to the temperature switch and stick in on end of the jumper to the connector. ground the other end anywhere and if the fan comes on, the wiring is ok> If the fan doesnt come on, trace down the wiring to the fan. I did all this and the switch was bad. replaced the switch and it still hasnt' come on (this is the Heavy duty cooling fan on a 91) with only temperature. The guage gets to about 220 deg and stops, so Im not sure if the temp is high enough. Its getting hot here in Houston so Ill find out soon. Right now this second fan only comes on with the AC.

Hmmm. At least nobody else is having a problem quite as big as mine with that fan. Mine never comes on, not when it gets up to a million degrees, not with the ac on...never. The switch is good, the wiring is good, the relay is good, the fan motor is good. It just won't ever come on by itself. Actually, maybe the switch is bad. It is new, but that doesn't mean it is good. Although the old one I took out was good (checked it yesterday), so I dunno. Ok, I'll stop rambling now.

If all that stuff is good, it would almost have to be the ECM. The ECM actually turns the fan on when it recieves a signal from the switch. I just bought a refurbished on for about $80 (turning you old one in, core charge was another $80). My main fan was coming on with just the ignition turned to on. Also I wasn't getting a code 12 in diagnostic mode either. Do you get any codes? Do you get the code 12 ok?
