L98 Heads on 305?

Will these work? Or are they too big? Will I have to mill them down if they are, if so how much is that?

They will work. The combustion chambers are not too big. Milling will help. Your compression ratio will be the same with the L98s as it is now. That's okay, but with an aluminum head you could up the compression ratio .5-1.0.

Thats good, becasueI really need more compressions, also it wouldnt hurt fo rmy car to be louder :-) But will milling them help the compression also? Thanks

Which L98 heads are you talking about, cast iron or aluminum?

Cast iron have 64cc chambers, and will lower compression signifcantly. Aluminum have 58cc chambers, and will keep the static compression the same. But...

Either type should be milled about .040" for a 305 to get the compression where it should be - cast iron to make the chambers 305-like; aluminum to get the effective compression up to match the power cast iron 58cc chamber heads would make on a 305.

Only if you intend to put them on a 350 later should they not be milled.

whoa, ok so aluminum heads=good cast iron=bad. I want some more compression, I ahve 8.6 right now, and I want at least 9 or 9.2. If I get aluminum will it boost the compression? And will the L98 heads have to be 58cc?
If not the L98 heads, what other heads can I look for on ebay that are used that would be good and upgrade compression and horsepower?

Aluminum vette heads won't raise compression. If you don't get 58cc chambers your compression will suffer. The 305 torquer heads are another set that would be good. Those two are the only one's I heard many people using, but do some research and check out the specs and there may be something else that is good.

'87 LG4's had 9.3:1 compression. Is yours older, or was it rebuilt with dished pistons? Why do you think you have 8.6:1 now?

In my (humble) opinion, the best 305 heads are the ones made as an upgrade for 305's - World S/R Torquer 305's. If you can find a set used, that's the ticket for budget performance. Anything else will lower your compression, and/or will have other "issues" (like special intake for L31 Vortecs, or 305 Vortecs not flowing that well and needing special intake, etc.).

o my bad, you are right, 9.3 compression, sorry bout that. But why does my car sound so quiet. I have a gutted cat and flowmaster muffler, STILL dont have my headers and y-pipe on yet but I still think it shoudl be a little louder than it is now.
Well back to the heads, I thikn Ill save up my money for the World S/R Torquer heads I guess, and put in my cam and springs with it. Also, will new or bigger pistons boost compression?

Thanks a lot guys. I think Im gonna go with the World S/R Torquer Heads, and then get soem nice aluminum 1.5 rr's and put in my cam since the springs that come with them have a max lift of .560". Oh, btw...what kind of studs do I have, or what kind of studs would be on the World S/R Torquer heads, 3/8" or 7/16"? Thanks.

They have 3/8" screw-in rocker studs.

"They" as in "S/R Torquer 305".

Stock heads have 3/8" press-in studs.

(Sorry, I missed the "have right now" part - I get blinders when I see "S/R Torquers"...)
