Super L03 7000rpm

Just though I'd share this one with you all. A year ago, we put in a melling camshaft that was supposed to be a 206:214, 418 426(not exact lift but close). I was maually shifting at 5200-5500rpm's for awhile. Then we changed the centrifrugal governor in the tranny. The one I ordered from GM was supposed to be for a '92 Z28 L98. After the new governor was in, it was shifting way too high@ WOT.
I figured it was to do with the fact that the Z28 would have had 3.23's and I still had 2.73's at the time. Well, needless to say, it didn't fix it by putting in 3.23's.(it must be the one for a V6 car?) I was scared for awhile to push it so I rarely got on it until it shifted. But eventually like 6-8months ago, I decided to let loose. The one-two shift comes at 6500-6800, and the 2-3 shift comes at 6800-7000rpm!!! When we changed the cam, we didn't even replace the valve springs(still has stock 178,000 miles on them)! Don't ask me how or why, but this motor freaking loves it, it pulls solid all the way up(feels like peak power at 6700). I have a better flowing intake and good exaust, but I never expected it to work for that range. It doesn't even float the valves! With the 2.73's it lost all lowend torque, but was awesome on the highway, now it is great all around, still not much down low though. The only thing we can figure is that the cam was miss boxed? But with the B&M kit, it lays a mean 2nd gear patch of rubber. This really says something about GM and the L03's quality if you ask me, so we have some good motors fellas. I will need to get a different tranny governor for sure when my 350 goes in, cause it will redine at 6 grand, hope I can find one that will shift at 5800. Thanks for reading guys!

Most likely your tach is inaccurate since most of our tachs are off somewhat. My tach @ 3000 rpm is 550 rpm's too high. At idle it is close to 200rpm's too high so at 6000 rpm's its just over a grand too high. Gm quality for you. Have your tach checked. You might not be reving as high as you think.

Well it sure sounds like it is reving that high, and based on the old cam specs, the L03 made peak power at 4 grand, and fell off at 4500. My tach was accurate in that respect with the peanut cam. But I'm sure there is a chance it is off somewhat.

Damn, sounds pretty freakin weird. If it did scream that high, that would be freaky as hell. I'd love to have a streat car that could rev that high, but then I'd start to think of myself as a ***** or something. Lol, but yeah, I'm sure that if your tach IS off, it wouldnt be by much.

Just be carefull though, who knows what kinda crap can happen when an engines goin that high......

You must have done something right if you're "laying a mean patch in Second" like you say you are.

Well you can call bull, but I'm running the stock TBI with around 12-13psi fuel pressure, and as far as the intake goes, I have a different intake, but it is a stock chevy TBI casting for a 350 truck. There are like 8 different castings for TBI intakes, and I have the one that flows the best out of all of them. The one that comes on the L03 camaros and firebirds, is one of the worst. I am not b/s'ing you.

from '87-95 in all GM cars and trucks, I was told that there were several(6-8), but I could be wrong. A friend of mine heard it from someone on this board awhile back. Anyway, some guy supposedly bench flowed all of them(however many there are), and the casting # that flowed the best is the one I got from a bone yard. Maybe there are only two?

well for smallblock chevys I think there are 2. There could have been several bigblock TBI intakes and several v6 ones but those shouldn't be counted in our discussions anyway.

I agree. At any rate, the 350 casting outflows the 305 one, so it could be said that by puting it on top of a 305 motor, it will allow for more RPM's.

I wouldn't exactly say little $$, I have had the car 5 years, and have put a lot into it. If you are refering to the cam and gears, they were cheap though. It isn't really that fast, it ran 15.89 with 2.73's, but with these gears, I think it will be closer to 15 flat. But remember, the 305 is going away, with the 350 and drag radials, it should go high 12's.
