383 parts list and build thread

Just got my block back from the machine shop, it was a '95 350 TBI from a truck, I got the cylinders bored .030 over, got the holes tapped for the spiders so it's now roller ready, and got it cleaned/new bearings/freeze plugs and all that basic stuff

Parts list:

Scat 9000 series 383 rotating assembly (cast steel crank, forged rods and pistons, plasma ductile rings, 9.8:1 cr with 64cc heads)

OEM roller cam assembly (kit includes spider, dogbones, lifters, and bolts)

Not sure on pushrods, I need to measure for the size I need when I get the cam

Comp roller cam (.560/.560 lift w/1.5 rockers, 230/230 dur. @.050, 110 lsa)

Patriot performance vortec style heads (185cc 2.02 valve intake, 60cc (?) 1.60 valve exhaust, 64cc chambers)

Edelbrock RPM air-gap vortec style intake manifold

Holley 770cfm 4-bbl carb (elec. choke, vac. Secondary)

Hooker headers with pipes running back and turn out right in front of the rear wheels

3.42 posi rear

Rebuilt 700r4 with a reverse manual valve body and b&m ratchet shifter

I think that's all I have planned for now, engine/drivetrain wise anyways

Id appreciate anyone's input on any of these parts or combination of parts and this will turn into a build thread in about a month, this is going into a 91 RS with a 305 and it will be taken to the drag strip multiple times per year, but not in any really big events

383 TBI, cool

Heated single plain intake manifold over the air gap and GM 54mm TBI TB.

That's a big cam, you are courageous.

Actually, it's going to be converted over to a carb, it is TBI right now tho, and what advantage would I get by measuring piston to deck? Just wondering, and I had both decks cut parallel to the mains

TBI would be cooler.

I agree, but then I have to go through all the tuning and all of that stuff, so a carb will be easier and cheaper in the long run, but you're right, TBI would be awesome

Re: 383 parts list and build thread

Oh and with the cam, the heads will take .575 lift, so it's almost the biggest cam I can use, I'm hoping it'll make a lot of torque

Re: 383 parts list and build thread

Get rid of that 110 LSA cam. Comp Cam can grind the same profile on 112 to 114 LSA and it will work with OK with EFI - you'll have at least 14 to 16 in-Hg at idle. Naturally, custom tune, BBC TB, 80 lb/hr injectors and higher fuel pressure will be required. I built a similarly configured engine 2years ago - and it is please to drive in 4000+ lb Monte.

Surprised more than a few rice rockets and pony drivers.

Use push rod checker to determine length.

I'm swapping in a carb, so no fuel injection, and I have a pushrod checker

Easier and cheaper to stay TBI.
