Re: Just want 200hp

Well what I want to do is get a longer hose with a wider mouth to put on there or the TPI air box I have on so that I can get cooler air into the open element, I know it's not doing much now but that stock elbow might be bringing in some cooler air

Re: Just want 200hp

doesnt make any sense to me. why not just make a sealed box and actually have cold air induction.

but again its your car and you can do as you want

It does look ugly but I but bet you are geting some decen cold air at higher speeds. Try taking both the air box and tbi snorkle off, then do some street driving, then get up to 40 or so on the highway, and then nailing it up to 75. Then put everything back, do it all again, and see if you notice a difference.

Re: Just want 200hp

Ok bottomline...he ( the op. ) DID say 200HP. Not improve et times.
true gear change gives the seat of the pants dyno some *****, BUT..... all the gears in the world don't mean **** if you don't have any hp or torque to move the car.
I'd love to have a 1000+ft lbs of torque with whatevr HP, than a 1000+ HP motor with little torque.
Headers are in my future along with a posi gear change.

So to be devil's advocate, get headers and a decent exhaust AND a gear change.
( by the way Einstein ...a gear change is a tad bit more involved than a bolt on mod. )

im pretty sure that if your talking about swapping out a rear end it is a bolt on part considering theres only 8-10 bolts holding the thing in, takes 30 minutes.

Re: Just want 200hp

Do the open element because its cheap and simple.

Do headers and 3" cat back. (Don't listen to 1Gary. It worked well for me.)

Tune or some kind of chip and you get the results your looking for.

I agree, headers with 1.75" primaries, 2.5" collectors, 2.5" pipes into a single 3" exhaust worked very well for every 305 I ever built. The 1980 Vette is in the 13s with a lowly little 305 under the hood and its backed to a stock stall powerglide and 3.07 gears. On a 305 making 340 HP we lost nearly 30 hp to the wheels running the L82 corvette ramshorn manifolds and stock Y-pipe into a single 3" exhaust. We installed those to fit the engine into the car on the cheap, however it will be addressed very soon. In the 1980 C10 with long tubes and 2.5" dual exhaust with a H-pipe backed to a 3,000 stalled TH350 and 8.5" 10-bolt the engine made 298RWHP. In the Vette with its more efficient driveline, it only made 268 RWHP. That tells me the engine lost some serious power and the only change to it was the loss of headers and change of exhaust.

As for headers a set of long tubes on an otherwise stock ~180 HP carbureted 305 was worth nearly 20 hp at the wheels and signifigant torque gains from 1,500 rpm through 5,500 rpm. I have had multiple vehicles pickup 2-3 tenths in the 1/8 with headers and pickup grunt in the lower rpm range.
