Tune-up

Hey guys, for anyone who has taken there camaro to a shop to do a tune up, what is everything that the shop did? And what did it cost? And also anyone who is unhappy with there stock 305 tbi, spend $50 on an open element air cleaner and a bottle of transmission fluid and you'll be a lot happier, new air cleaner= amazing throttle response and great sound, flushing and replacing transmission fluid= extremely smooth shifts (I couldn't even tell that my car was shifting!) plus why burn out your transmission?

Re: Tune-up

most people have different ideas on a tune up. cap plugs rotor and wires is what i would do if it has been a while. check timing as well. also i remove the tbi and clean it. look underneath it may be plugged. remove the iac and clean it to. i change all filters as well. that should be a good start. and if it is all factory then put the factory replacement plugs back in it.

Re: Tune-up

not being able to feel the transmission shift is not necessarily a good thing.

Re: Tune-up

Tune up is a DIY thing - I'd never pay anyone for such a simple service. Plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap, fuel filter, air filter. That's all there is to it. Maybe an hour max in the driveway!

Re: Tune-up

Yea I'll probably do it myself, I'm not that good with working on cars (I'm a construction guy) but I should be able to do most of it

Re: Tune-up

i jst finished up my tune up. i remove the smog pump so changing the plugs were alot easeir to do. however the back plugs on both side need to be changed from the bottom. trust me..dont try doing it from the top. just jack the car up and they are right there. i used ac delco plugs, MSD cap, rotor, and coil, and Taylor wires. made a big difference IMO. still need to change my fuel filter though.

i also highly recommend doing the ultimate TBI mods. i did them last year and im happy with the results along with my 14x3 K&N air filter. plus my new chrome valve covers.

Re: Tune-up

Not too bad to do yourself. If you do construction you have some mechanical knowledge. Just dont expect to whip it out in 1 hour. take your time since its the first time you have done it and make sure to remember how things are. And if you drop a plug A. Remember what hole you put it in B. just get a new plug.

Re: Tune-up

401kfirebird- I'll eventually get around to all of the ultimate tbi mods, the only thing is my new open element air cleaner won't fit if I take that gold spacer ring off, which sucks but it did help a lot more than the stock air intake, and thanks for the tip, I'll hopefully get to doing the tune up before school starts up again

UnderCover89Tbi- thanks, I know it'll take me longer than most people could do it, but it'll be a good project for me and one of my buddies or my dad to work on for the day, and thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to not mix them up

Re: Tune-up

I would really suggest investing in a Haynes repair manual for your car. It will walk you through the procedures of working on your car. It really helped me out when I needed it and saved me a ton of money on mechanics.

Re: Tune-up

That's what someone else told me but I measured and they look more like 2.5", they are kind of hard to measure with the huge slant in them

Re: Tune-up

sure they're stock? could have been changed at some point and time. stock exhaust on the tbi cars is one of its biggest downfalls

Re: Tune-up

if you use an open element filter that isnt a drop base and use a 3 inch air filter you can eliminate the gold spacer. if the new open element is drop base then unfortunately you have to use the gold spacer.

i have a non drop base with a 3" K&N air filter and i removed the gold spacer.

when you do the ultimate TBI mods just remember to take you time and go slow. can always take more off but cant put more back on..
