Air charge temp sensor?

When I bought my camaro, the previous owner had put an air cleaner on:

What sensors need to be moved or relocated? I know there are threads and how-to's on doing this but none of them really have pictures. My uncle tells me that I need an air charge sensor. The previous owner put a paperclip into one of the plugs to trick the computer, but I don't know what sensor SHOULD be there. You can see it circled in the picture above.

Re: Air charge temp sensor?

It's probably the AIr temp sensor you need. you can cut a hole in th ebottom of the air cleaner to mount it there. If you have to pass smog you might needs the thermac, but im not sure where you are. Other than that that's the only sensor they had to mess with to put that air cleaner on.

I was thinking that, the air charge temperature sensor? What is this thing:

Is that the thermac? I'm in MA, and after the car is 15 years old, it doesn't need to pass smog/emissions.

Re: Air charge temp sensor?

Thats it. Thermac. It diverts air from ext manifold. Base of AC as stated is place to put IAT sensor. IAT sensor is is a 0-5V sensor. I ohm'd mine to see what would happen when it was new. I placed in freezer and as it warmed up sure enough resistance changed. I presume with paper clip in there no resistance. Not sure if that is a good idea. i doubt it is. cheap enough to buy.

You need Inlet Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. OE part # is 25037313 used in 89 (many others) Camaro 305 w/ TBI ("E" engine). There is no 'Air Charge Temperature' sensor on third gen. IAT can be screwed into the base of your open base air cleaner assembly - past inner diamter of the air filter element.

Re: Air charge temp sensor?

Okay, I ordered one, do I need to make a hole in the air cleaner base, or is there a spot for it already? I never really looked at the base of it. I would right now, but my car isn't here where I live.

Re: Air charge temp sensor?

u can also relocated somewere in the engine bay, some ppl say its good to put it somewere were theres cooler air but i guess that does nothing, i drilled a hole the size of the sensor on my open element base and left it there, also if i were you i would buy an AC delete pulley and install it in place of the compressor there, the PO sure did a nice job removing the ac lol hey why remove the lines when u can just twist and cut them, i guess he just let all the freon out.

I"m not too sure why he did that haha Is it possible for me to reinstall the parts that he removed so that I can have AC again?

Sure you can. Just replace what is gone.

EDIT: I was looking at the wrong (the 2nd) pic.

They call it the accumulator, or the reciever drier. If your system has been open it's best to flush it out. I would also replace the orifice tube, it'll be easier to flush w/o that in there.

I would look for a spot in the base of the air cleaner plate that is interference free. Most of these open element cleaners were designed for carburetor application - hence no provisions for IAT mount. You'll definitely need to check for interference before drilling a hole for IAT. As side note - these oversize air cleaners feed engine with hot, under-hood air. I would rather feed cold air instead.

the orifice tube is inline in the a/c hose. your a/c hoses may have been cut or look like they are missing...check out the cooling thread for any a/c questions.

Re: Air charge temp sensor?

I will suggest the proper way to do that is to weld a nut on bottom and thread it in from bottom.

Re: Air charge temp sensor?

Well, after my uncle told me that I need an air charge temp sensor, and I have seen the same type of sensor being uses on another member's open air cleaner. Is this the right thing?

I can't remember what member is is who has it, or if they are even on this website, I may have gotten it confused. Anyway, is that it?

Re: Air charge temp sensor?

I am using a 1989 L03 IAT (camaro). It does not look like your photo. The tip is more like a small lipstick protruding for lack of a better word. First one they sold me(1992 L03) was a birdcage looking devise and it would not work.
