Lost and Confused
First off, I love these cars.
My 91 RS 304/700R4 made 311,396 miles. Engine was still running, but rings were shot. Bought a brand new stock 305 crate engine straight from GM. The engine stated that I needed to replace the oil pan with mine before install.
Well, got the new engine completed and installed, it now has 420 miles on it. The issue is, we are still fighting the timing. The computer states 6 degrees, but whenever we put it there, it stumbles and runs rough.
This car is a daily driver, so we have added retard to it, so it won't mess anything up. Last night, our 3rd Gen Champ in our car club, stated I had to adjust the IAC and TPS. Mine is one of the ones where you cannot adjust them or calibrate them, by what I was able to see.
The problem is, how can I get my timing set right, so I don't blow out a brand new engine. Any and all help right now is gratefully accepted.
Thanks.

Re: Lost and Confused
The IAC and TPS are non-adjustable, so nothing to do there.
To set the timing, warm up the engine, open the EST/BYPASS connector, then set the distributor to put the timing at 0* BTDC. Turn off engine, tighten distributor hold down and re-connect the EST/BYPASS connector.

Re: Lost and Confused
Got it, that should help. Only issue, is it is a custom tuned chip, and I am not sure what the timing is set to in the chip.
