shorted coil power wire and burnt ign. switch now starts hard??
had a mishap where the aftermarket air breather rubbed a hole in the coil power wire and burned out the fusable link at the starter and the power wire under the dash from the ign switch to the fuse panel... oh yea and the ign. switch. Still got continuity through the red wire from the ign switch to the fuse panel so to get the wifey on the road quickly i replaced the fusable link and the ign switch but now it takes forever for it to start... like maybe the TBI is not giving that initial squirt of fuel not very schooled in the finer art of FI so be easy on me please... the wifey swears that if she pumps the pedal a few times on that TBI it will start easier , to save the arguements, I just agreed

Check your fuse panel for fuses that may have blown when the short happened.

There shouldn't be any squirt of fuel until the ECM sees a certain number of DRPs from the distributor, which tells the ECM how fast the engine is spinning. The ECM also uses this to determine spark advance.

The turning distributor creates the reference pulses (DRP's) when cranking. The ECM needs contact with the distributor to determine engine speed for many functions. When the ECM sees the RPM get close to 400 - 450, then it starts delivering the cranking fuel, which contains much extra fuel. That's the fuel that starts the engine.
Normally the ECM bases spark advance on the DRP signal from the distributor. If it loses connection with the distributor, then it goes into a default mode. The distributor may still function on base timing alone, but the ECM will not be able to add any advance. No advance would suggest a lost connection there.
If you hold the throttle open past a certain TPS%, then it goes into "clear-flood mode" which reduces the amount of cranking fuel by a lot.
Datalogging or hooking your ECM up to a scanner may help in determining what is wrong.

I saw, somewhere in a thread on this forum, a link to a program download for datalogging... what is the required equipment for this operation? Sorry, again I am a newbie to automotive computers and FI... please forgive the virgin...
