'92 Camaro RS 305ci TBI Advice

Greetings from the other side of the pond (UK to be exact)

I've recently bought a 1992 Camaro RS with a 305ci TBI motor, the car is totally stock apart from a Borla cat back system.

What would be my next step to getting more power from ths engine? I'd be happy with say 250-300bhp as I've read this can be done with just bolt on parts.

I read that the standard air cleaner is very restrictive so maybe I should do something with that? Can I get a pancake style filter? all the ones I've looked at say they are for use with carbs. Even then I'd need to get cold air to it right?

Also can I remove the emissions equipment to gain some power? as I don't think it's a requirement over here. And what would be best to replace the cat with...a straight pipe or a cherry bomb glass pack?

Thanx

Andy

P.S. I should mention that I'm not all that mechanically minded...although I am learning!

Look at the stickys in the top of the TBI section and you should gain some pretty good info off of there.

But yes lose the stock air cleaner and just got with an open element.

As far as emissions go you can drop the AIR system if yall just have the sniffer test and save some weight and open up the engine bay but it wont really have any power gain.

Re: '92 Camaro RS 305ci TBI Advice

if you want the feel of having more power without touching the engine, definitely do 3.73 gears and a posi unit. And, instead of saying you want a specific amount of horsepower tell us how fast you want to the car to be in say the quarter mile or 0-60. There are a few mods that can be done (gears, torque converter, suspension) that can make the car faster but not add a single horsepower to the engine.

Also, this is a great site to learn about working on your car, good luck! (although installing gears are best left up to the professionals)

Re: '92 Camaro RS 305ci TBI Advice

Hmm...well I guess all i really want is enough power to back up it's looks. Everyone that looks at it is like "wow, that looks fast!" in reality it's not that fast at all these days.

I think from what I've read my first step should be an open element filter then maybe some decent headers and get rid of the cat.

I think i'll go with an Edelbrock element with a K&N filter, anyone know which part numbers to use with the L03 TBI?

Thanx

I wouldn't get rid of the cat, but replace ith with an aftermarket "Hi-Flow" converter, and then do the headers and 3" exhaust...that will help a bit, along with the air filter/open element...and the 3.42 or the 3.73 will make a nice difference.

you're not going to reach 250 hp with those swirl-port heads, unless you resort to nitrous or boost.

Re: '92 Camaro RS 305ci TBI Advice

What helped my 305 a lot was the lt1 cam. while i was in their and had the heads off i did some mild porting and polishing of the heads. added an edlebrock intake, open element filter with riser, headman headers, high flow converter and edlebrock exhaust. Also did the tbi mods with bigger injectors and adjustable fuel regulator.

All this was done under 500 bucks. The most expensive thing was the gasket set. I took my time and could have had it all done in one day but slowly did it over the winter. Now this winter i will be throwing in the 3.73's and will see how it does. I use to just hit the gas without the brake and could get the tires to spin.

This motor will be going in my s10 once the 350 is built. but the 305 can be a decent motor to tinker with. But once you start playing you will want more power.

Re: '92 Camaro RS 305ci TBI Advice

As for your open element, I don't have a part number for you but I went with a 3" tall, 14" diameter Edelbrock and it fits excellent on the L03. I have no idea what the parts supply is like for you guys in the UK but here I just picked it up from a local NAPA Autoparts.

I've been reading these boards awhile and from what I can tell, the biggest improvement without actually doing any motor work will be better gears. I'm swapping to a 3.42 posi disc rear from my stock 2.73 open dif. over the winter and am hoping it'll make a fairly big difference.

ok. i need to know what would be the best place to go to get all the wireing replaced because someone that had the car before me tried to make it a drag car.

'92 Camaro RS 305ci TBI let me know how the 3.73 goes my goul is to make it about a 7s car. i know i will need to put a 350 in it but cant right now.

I would say get everything from the junk yard and gat the wiring and comp or just run a carb with the basic wires needed.
