What's the real HP on an LO3 TBI?
I've got a '92 RS. I know is that it is factory rated at 170hp/255tq. Is that at the crank or to the wheels? I would think that is to the wheels, I can't imagine it being less than 150rwhp.
That would mean an L98 is around 200hp to the wheels. That doesn't sound right.

Today ASE engine ratings are established on an engine dyno. I don't know for sure what the standards for testing were 16 years ago, but I would imagine they are very similar. There is also some debate about actually how much power is consumed in the drivetrain, and about the accuracy of chassis dynos. So there is no perfect answer for RWHP/TQ.

BONE STOCK, they will be in the 140ish whp range. The standards for testing got stricter a number of years ago. If they released a 1992 RS today with an L03, it would probably be rated at 150-160 instead of the 170 they said back in 1992.
And its at the crank on an engine dyno that they get there results from, gives them higher numbers then whats going to the wheels, 170 sure sounds better then 140 to me.

'Bout right. My 89 RS put 142hp and 224lb/ft to the wheels in bone stock form. LO3, T5, 3.08 posi.
All three runs that day charted

Heres my dyno sheet with upgraded fuel system, and exhaust. [the high torque run was a mistake I think, because its alot higher then all the other runs]

Re: What's the real HP on an LO3 TBI?
The non-roller cam L03 in my fullsize Van made 35 RWHP more through a 700r4 than the above manual transmission car. Mods were Headers, Dual Exhaust, and Prom Tuning. Stock cam, stock heads, stock compression ratio, stock intake, stock throttle body, and stock air cleaner at the time. Keep in mind this engine was also pulling a 7 bladed mechanical clutch fan in 105*F temps and a beefier, heavier driveline. Both of which were absorbing engine power.

My original thirdgen, a '92 RS, dynoed at 158 RWHP and 220 RWTQ after I installed a 2.75" stock cat-back from a 350 TPI IROC.

Re: What's the real HP on an LO3 TBI?
Why do you think that? Actually, a lot of the GM engines actually gained HP and TQ due to the new ratings system. The LS7 Corvette engine went from 500 to 505. The import engines (Toyota/Honda/Nissan) actually lost power, some as much as 30 HP!
