A Little Tech Assistance Please

HOWDY!

I just recently purchaced a 1992 Camaro RS with the 305cid and TBI. I would like to do a few things to upgrade the outstanding performance that I am receiving from this excellent vehicle, however, I don't want to have to play around with the computer due to the fact that this is a daily driver/date vehicle for my wife and I.

What I would like to do is install a mild camshaft, Edelbrock Performer TBI intake, and a good set of headers to dual the exhaust. My question is this, what camshaft would be good for a mild boost in power that would work well without messing with the computer and would complement the intake and headers?

I would appreciate any assistance that can be found.

Re: A Little Tech Assistance Please

Perhaps I should explain further.

My computer knowledge does not extend much past turning one on and off. My mechanical experience stems from a ground up rebuild of a 1965 Shelby. Needless to say I have been overwhelmed by the ammount of information in the DIY PROM area, not to mention I don't understand a single thing being said in that part of the forum. I have tried the search feature to no avail.

I have all confidence that I can add the parts within a few hours without difficulty, but the computer stuff scares me more than entering a house with a hostage situation and being armed with only a water gun.

Re: A Little Tech Assistance Please

Bore the 3704 tbi manifold to at least 46mm like the stock manifold and port it (stock manifold also has a "cross" flow bore).

I really suggest you get an EBL flash in first place, will teach you how to tune, tune and bring the TBI to life.

Its not like you cant drive the car wenn you are tuning, EBL includes the stock bins whaiting to by uploaded, driven and coustomized with some volumetric efficiency learns that the EBL calculates by itself.

Tuning the stock lo3 with full exhaust will give way better results then, swapping manifold, wery mild cam and exhaust all together without tune.
And you dont even get dirty

Re: A Little Tech Assistance Please

are the bores of the 3704 manifold even smaller than the stock one?
what about that cross flow bore you mentioned, and did you just gasket-match the ports of the manifold?
thanks
i'm also going to use the EBL Flash for tuning which i have absolutely NO idea about, at least not yet but i'm convinced that this for sure is the way to squeeze the most juice out of it. you probably wont get good drivability, performance and economy if you dont tune it. the ebl shouldn't be too hard to understand because of it's VE Learn as already mentioned by thomas.

From what I understand, the bores on the 3704 are the same size as stock bores 1-11/16".

CamaroCop:

Pretty much anything you do beyond intake & headers will result in a need for a computer tune. If you want to avoid tuning and still pick up some power & performance, I'd suggest that you do the following:

1. Get a Holley Pro-Jection Intake manifold and TBI unit. Links:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

This will allow room for future upgrades and make your car breath better. The TBI unit is plug and play.

2. Probably wouldn't hurt to a get an CFM Tech AFPR and a Granatelli 255lph fuel pump. Links:
http://marine-performance-parts.com/...843505774.aspx
http://www.jegs.com/i/Granatelli/467/GM722-2/10002/-1

This will ensure that you are getting the proper amount of fuel to the TBI and allow room for future upgrades.

3. Exhaust. I don't think that you will be able to do duals on the car due to lack of under hood space. That coupled with emissions legality makes it hard to do without serious mods. But you're in luck, Hooker makes an awesome set of emissions legal headers and there are several good 3" cat-back systems out there. So, you'll need: headers, cat, and cat-back. Links:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

This is a fairly decent setup and should do good unless you really want to go hog wild crazy.

4. Port your intake and heads. Now, I don't know how much this will affect the car with respect to tuning, but it should be fine.

5. Give the car a good tune up and you should be good to go.

If you are interested in tuning, look into getting an EBL. Forum member RBob makes it and is more than happy to answer any questions you have about it.

Hope this helps.

I dont think GM used a better intake manifold for export, but you can mesure and inspect yours.
Stock intake manifold is 46mm and has a "crossflow" bore between the 2 bores.
Edelbrock 3704 is 42mm and has no crossflow. I bougt 2 3704, the last one approx 1 jear ago.

The bigger TB will require some serious tuning, higer fuel pressure requires tuning too.

Stock manifold supports 250hp for sure, stock TB 280hp and injectors with the adequate fuel pressure 300hp.
Under 300hp you dont need a 255lph fuel pump for a tbi.

Here you go.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tbi/...-350-swap.html

The second one is for a 350 swap but the other mods can apply to your 305.

Not trying to argue, just telling him what I've read on here. There was thread a couple months ago about the Edelbrock TBI v. Holley Pro-Jection and the guys was talking about having to bore out the Edelbrock from 1-11/16" to 2" to work with his Holley TBI. Heres a few threads about the Edelbrock TBI:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tbi/...brock-tbi.html
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tbi/...take+a+success

From what I understand, the Holley TBI is a direct replacement to the stock TBI and thats my understanding from both Holley and TGO. Also, wouldn't the new AFPR compensate for the increased fuel flow? Set it to stock pressure and the excess fuel goes back to the tank. I could be completely wrong as I am still learning, but I was giving my opinion based on what I currently know.

Re: A Little Tech Assistance Please

I have a 50mm Eddy intake and I have had good success with it. It can be done easily if there is a competent shop in your town that can bore it out that deep.
