Starting my S/C 305, T56 build [will have pics]
Kind of a continuation of my old thread
http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/th...ower-will.html
But tomorrow im getting a bunch more parts in the mail from Jegs and once this check clears im going to be buying the vette L98 heads for 600$ [LT4 springs, lifters, has some upgraded studs, and a bunch of other little things done to them]
This week whenever my friend gets the lug nut removal kit [he lost the key for his rims] im going to be putting the LS1 rear end [with brakes] and driveshaft with 3.42 gears on my car. Also going to add my TDS rear sway bar, 1LE end links and proportioning valve at the same time.
Then probably this weekend im going to get the 700r4 out of my car and put the windage tray and oil system.
Ill post pictures and stuff as the build progresses.

What timing chain do you guys recommend?
I ordered the comp cams 2136 because I thought it was better then the 3136.
But I asked comp and they said "The high tech is better due to the fact it has a full roller chain." The high tech is the 3136.

i have edelbrock's full roller timing chain but if i could do it all over i would have gotten a gear drive but all in all the edelbrock is a nice piece.

Well the 2136 was backordered, so I just called Jegs and there going to ship me the 3136 instead.
Whats a "gear drive", I dont know really anything about timing chains, im just getting the 3136 because thats what Comp Cams recommended.

Chains have to be replaced because the eventually develop slack. Once you have slack, it will upset or make the timing irratic. This will never have slack.
Also some people complain that the gears are too noisy compared to a chain, but thats subjective.

Well I guess if mine ever gets slack ill just change it for the gears.
But ive never heard a TBI Whipple supercharger, so its going to be exciting first time I fire it up, lol.
And as far as progress goes, I got my friends rims off and just have to upbolt the torque arm and driveshaft and unplug all the wires and cut the brakes lines and then pretty much do the same on my car and switch the rear ends.
Ill attach a couple of pictures I quickly snapped of how the wrecked 2001 Trans Am looks now. Oh yeh my friend also had royal purple gear oil put in the rearend along with a new gasket. And his driveshaft looks all nice and shiny, lol.

Well I decided to use a wilwood proportioning valve. How should I get that on then?
And what went wrong when you cut it?

its a pain in the *** to re bend those lines i guess you could gut it where the proportioning valve gose and put 2 flare fittings and 2 unions then rubber brake line unless you can thread in to it

Thats the valve I got. Just tell me what part numbers you would recommend me getting.

92 Firebird had stock 2.73 gears and drum breaks and just put in a 3.27 posi with rear disc from an 89 formula 350. Did not change the proportioning valve at all and I have no issues. Some setups may need that, but not sure.
I had a professional race car builder install rear end along with all the UMI goodies. He did not recommend the valve. It's been 3 weeks and she's doing great.

Hmmm, I though that drum brakes were less efficient then disc and used higher pressure so a proportioning valve was needed?

Re: Starting my S/C 305, T56 build [will have pics]
I thought the same thing and consulted with two different individuals who build for a living. None of them said it should be an issue. As of right now my car breaks better than it ever has.
If you do a search on here you will find that it's a 50/50 split on this topic. If it's not too much money it won't hurt to change it. You could always do that last.

I already have the valve sitting in my garage. I just wont install it, and if I need it then ill just chop into the line and put it on.

I should have the new rear end and brakes all on by this weekend. So we'll see how the brakes work soon enough. Then its time to dig into the engine [the real hard part]

Only thing I hate is all the little hangups, it seems like I can work on my car all day and be exhausted and only have 1/4 of what I planned on doing that day done

Re: Starting my S/C 305, T56 build [will have pics]
There are always little hang ups... lol! I have been working on replacing my cam for about 4 weeks. It started with the idea of replacing the cam, then finding the one i wanted then deciding to change the manifold. That lead to me finding a 454 TBI unit then porting the Edelbrock 3704 to 50mm, then finding/making the adapter plate and so on and so forth!!!!
Then there was the fuel line issue.... and another issue....
All I have done is gather parts, modified them and now waiting for the time to do it all. CRAZY isn't it???

Yeah, I wish I could just go to sleep and wake up and have the pile of parts on my car!
Or just convince my friends to do all the work while I watched TV, lol.
I just need to finish my car, because I only have one. And it sucks not being able to drive.
What fuel line issue did you have? What heads and cam you got?

If I may ask, what kind of Whipple supercharger are you using? Is it a twin screw for a carb engine?

Re: Starting my S/C 305, T56 build [will have pics]
My fuel line issues were actually simple. 1. trying to figure how I wanted to run them in order to clean up under the hood. 2. Trying to figure out what sizes everything was and what to use for parts/hoses, etc.
The 350 is a stock TBI bored to .030 and was a remanufactured engine. I did all the "external" mods that could be done. Now I am adding a few extra mods. I am putting a 95 LT1 cam. Leaving the stock 191 heads for now. I am saving up the money to get the Airflow Researchs heads or something similar to match. I am not looking for a 400+ hp motor, just a strong 325-350.

My system is almost 100% like this one [its linked to in my thread also] -

If I were you id wait on the cam then. Its best to get cams and heads at the same time so you can match them.

You're better off getting the better chain-hopefully it is a reboxed Cloyes Tru-Roller, which is the only thing to use in a performance application.
The ONLY and I mean only application where a gear drive is recommended or a benefit is in a sprint car because they drive the fuel pump, oil pump, power steering pump, and magneto off of the cam. Chains are better for driving the camshaft because gear drives set up some weird harmonics in the valve train. The ONLY reason people put them on street cars is for the noise (posers).

And I thought the chain develop slack, so that would be an advantage of the gear drive.

I was thinking of getting a pair of those in a few months, just for the rear when I go to the track.
What size would be best? I was thinking of going with 12in wide tires, but I dont know the rear spacing or the bolt pattern.

Well got the rear end out of the 2001 Trans Am. The brake lines [with the fluid] I just upbolted so I dident have to cut them.
The brake lines with the metal inside [I guess what it pulls when you push the brake pedal] I had to cut that.
I started taking stuff off my rear end, but dident get super far.

Well today I got the old rear end totally off and started getting the new rear end mounted [got the torque arm and driveshaft on]
Im not getting the LT1 T56 til early in september. So im just going to get the rear end all done so that when I do the tranny swap I just gotta unbolt a few things and slide the driveshaft out. And then when the motors done I can at least take it out to drive and see how poopy it drives.

I ordered some lakewood lower control arms, since i figured I might as well replace them while im back there.
I think the brake lines I cut were for the parking brake, thats what my dad said and im looking online and that seems to be correct [based on pictures of parking brake cables]
My question is what parking brake cable should I get? 2001 trans am ones or 1992 Firebird ones? If you can send me the park number that will be great.
Im planning on getting it from advanced auto parks and just ordering the LT1 T56 starter at the same time.

Okay well I was looking at the 2 hydraulic lines on the LS1 rear end and 1 line goes to each brake, but as far as I can tell my car only has 1 hydraulic line?
Anyone who has installed an LS1 rear end or just LS1 brakes please chime in.

Maybe ill just cut the lines off my old rear end and use those? Unless they sell a 1 to 2 adapter or something.
And I think ill order parking brake lines for a 2001 trans am and see if those fit good.

And I went ahead and ordered Earls brake line kit-
http://www.spohn.net/shop/1982-1992-...um-Brakes.html
I ordered the drum brake one since it should hopefully have the T fitting I need along with all the other fittings I need.
I was going to get the Russel kit from Jegs, but I read that some people had problems with them so I went with the one from Earls.

Went and bought my engine hoist today. 2 ton for 165$
Now that I see how huge it is I hope that Ill have enough room in front of the car, lol. I also ordered the parts I was missing for the supercharger from Whipple, 350$, ouch.
Still not sure about the harmonic balancer.
