300 HP from a 305 TBI
Is this possible, i talked to the guy from tbichips.com and he said it is, and that instead of swapping my 1990 305 tbi with 97000 miles on it, that i should put new vortec heads a different cam and some other stuff. he said he would send me the link to the article in Chevy high performance magazine.
is this possible, or should i stick with my original plan to swap to a 350 HO with 330 HP?

Re: 300 HP from a 305 TBI
its definately possible,it just depends on how much money you are looking to spend and being able to tune your computer. going with a bigger cam and better heads is a big step and also a better breathing exhaust system.

It is possible, but as was already stated it all depends on how much you want to spend. Keep in mind anything you spend on this 305 would have given you more on a 350.

Well this is the way I look at it. Do up some Vortecs nicely, install them with 350 style rubber embossed steel shim head gaskets, install a nice roller camshaft, use a Vortec Performer RPM intake, good headers with a decent full exhaust system and DIY tuning. You will want to upgrade the fuel pump and put in the 30 PSI GM fuel pressure regulator spring. That should push you over 300 hp while staying reliable and driveable.

Re: 300 HP from a 305 TBI
Got to begin with the end in mind. I just went through a build up not doing that and it just gets frustrating. If you are trying to accomplish the cheapest build, that is one way. Best horsepower, best fuel economy .....
Tons of people may not like nitrous, but people like TonyC have shaved a full second off the 1/4 mile with it and still keep drivability and fuel economy where they are at.
I ended up going the 350 route since I found a vortec motor rebuilt at a reasonable price. Then I found a LT-4 package, again saving money from what it would have cost new. Then I realized what would have to be done to the heads to use the cam. I priced it out, then bought a set of e-tecs from a TGO member and just revcently sold the 906s (less desirable vortec heads to find out after the fact). I also had to buy a GMPP manifold for the vortecs to work with TBI. Got it for 200, saving again some dough, and it was already bored to 2".
Anyway, I have had my car down for 6 months now, but my legs sure are stronger from walking so much which was a goal of mine.
Is emissions a concern? If so, it is a bit of a PITA to get the erg connected to vortec heads.
I'll stop now. If you want to keep driving, get a motor or car on the side to build while you keep yours together. If you want to go 305, you could start with a boneyard motor for probably $50 since the yards are full of them.
As far as the trans goes, I would wait until yours goes out. You could take the same approach with the trans and buy a junked one and have it rebuilt and use yours until it goes.

Good vortec article. If you plan on going with vortecs, get them from SDparts since they are already upgraded to handle a bigger cam. You are limited to .480 lift with stock vortecs.

Re: 300 HP from a 305 TBI
Here is a good article showing 372 hp at the crank for a older 305. The cam was only .470/.480.

Here are also a listing of modified vortec heads

What's your budget?

Re: 300 HP from a 305 TBI
I would go to schroggins Dicky(spell??) website. they seems to sell a lot of Chev Vortec heads. Or even check Summit/Jegs for same product. As stated they are modded for more lift if you need it for a small $$. BEst bang for $$ are Vortec. I say best street heads out there are Edelbrock ETec(vortec design) with the smaller or midsize runners for street use. BUT mucho more $$$$.

Re: 300 HP from a 305 TBI
my budget well, i wanted to put a brand new crate 350 in it, that with everything, including beefing up my tranny, would come to about 5 grand.
so if i can mod up my motor to 300 hp for half that it might be worth it, but i wont be doing much of the work myself.

Re: 300 HP from a 305 TBI
LOL...I just built a 350 for my 84 T/A. With everything included, it came up to just over $4700.00 once I stopped paying for all the small stuff that adds up not including the first three oil changes, new coolant etc. Oh yeah, and after spending 3 months trying to save money to put it in...I"m paying a guy now what's probably going to be close to $500.00 to finish it because I had some problems that are beyond my ability to resolve. I say once you set your "budget"...double it...and that's going to be pretty close to what you'll spend on it. hehe Good luck with your build up! Also, check out MW66Nova..he has a 325hp 305 in his camaro using his original 416 casting heads. so if you do go the 305 route, I'd talk with him.

How doable is 350 hp to the rear wheels.
I definitly want to keep the TBI. I like it.
Options would also include turbo or supercharging if N/A is no possible for HP to 350.
