Engine noise?

I just did a motor swap and i was driving around and i noticed it makes a ticking noise.... its not a knocking noise cause i know what that sounds like but it makes a ticking noise and it gets louder when i get on the throttle... i have tightened down my headers and sealed the exhaust and it still makes the noise... and i also raced my friends truck and i lost worse than when i had the L03..... any ideas?

Re: Engine noise?

you did put the 350 ecm chip, injectors, esc module, and exhaust on didn't you?

if not start with the ecm then full exhaust and then injectors and esc moule. also the lo3 fuel pump is barely adequatefor a stock lo3 much less an lo5. 190 walbro might be in your future. i only asked the above because it is overlooked more often than you think.

I have a TPI fuel pump installed, its got 350 headers, i changed the injectors, and i changed the stock computer out for the one that i got the 350 from.... whats the esc module? electronic spark control? Could it possibly be a knock sensor?

Re: Engine noise?

i was just verifiying all of the conversion work done to car to make sure that we have a good base for troubleshooting. The knock sensor is acoustically tuned to a specific frequency that it looks for when an engine begins to detonate. it has to do with the bore size. so the 305 sensor needs to be changd out. do you know what spark knock sounds like?. did you set your ignition timing, what degree did you set it to? the car you got the 350 from was a caprice?. if so the ecm nuber may be different, they do not directly interchange. caprice may be 16136965 and camaro may have been '8746. Hell thiss may be as simple as the engine just needing the valve lash readjusted.

idk what valve lash is lol and it was out of a 91' Blazer. I was just stumped because it has lots of low end torque like when you first get on it but after you get going it accels a LITTLE bit faster than my l03 did.... i am very disappointed with the performance. and i never set the timing... idk how... i just got her to run smooth and figured all was well... guess not lol

Re: Engine noise?

well the truck you took the engine out of was a 7747 i believe. you are running in imp home mode. put the camaros computer back in and search for setting the timing. it requires you to find the esc bypas wire by the distributor and unhook it with the engine fully warmed up at idle. set to 0 for now. then shut off engine and reook wire. the next restart should be faster and crisper. you will need to give us the ecm number so we can help further.

Re: Engine noise?

plug it in and try. The 305 CAMARO ecm should run better than the 350 truck ecm for now. Also, WHAT IS THE NUMBER ON YOUR ORIGINAL ECM, and WHAT IS THE ECM YOU TRIED TO SWAP IN. VERY IMPORTANT. back to noise diagnosis, does the engine make the noise at idle or only when put under a load such as acceleration? i need all of the above info to help you further.

Re: Engine noise?

i'll check the comp numbers tonight... but it makes the noise most under load.... i can't really notice it at idle if it does it at all...

Re: Engine noise?

sounds very much like spark knock. Go ahead and stick the 305 computer back in, let the car warm up at idle, then unhook the single wire connector (single brown wire) near/behind the disributor. set the timing back down to about 4 degrees advanced. it should idle low almost to 500 rpms when its close. this is a real rough method but gets us closer. Then shut the engine off, plug the wire back in and start the car/go for a drive, then report back.

Also the only other thing i noticed was when i revv the car up prolly past 3k it smokes but when i get past 4k it really blows out smoke! it looks like its burning oil... idk i think the guy who sold me the motor lied to me about the miles..... what do you think?

Re: Engine noise?

THe 305 ECM # is 8746 (last 4 digits) and the Truck 350 is 7747. I'm going to do the timing now......

Re: Engine noise?

I'm pretty sure i advanced the timing to 4*... doesn't seem like it did too much.... when i originally looked at the motor it looked like it was about 2* retarded. But thats all so far... and the noise it still there.....

Re: Engine noise?

well i give up..... it burned oil so bad it ran dry and started knocking.... only about a 20 min drive too! but i put some more oil in to get her home and she stopped knocking.... so i'm gonna pull it and drop in a 350 that only has 60,000 miles on it (papers to prove the rebuild) and go from there...... Thank alot for your help! i really appreciate it.

Re: Engine noise?

no prob. your 8746 can be chipped with a cal file from an 89 caprice police car with a 350. you might get someone to burn the correct chip for you if you needed it. now would be a good time to learn to tune yourself. the lo5 swap has been done about a million times and is well documented here. im sorry i didnt get back sooner, i had to work some overtime.
