355 carbed, want injection

ok, the setup i have right now is a 650 holley with a performer rpm intake, 416 heads, the fuel milage sucks................................................

is there any way to convert it over to tbi? would i see any milage or performance changes? is it worth the time and money?

Re: 355 carbed, want injection

I know it was a 305, not a 350, but when my TA was TBI it would get 26 mpg on the highway with the AC on. Obviously you would need to install the TBI wiring harness, but I am not sure if it would mate up with your existing underdash harness (I doubt it would).

You can just google TBI conversion, or check this http://www.automedia.com/TBI_Fuel_In...ht20001001fi/1

I think that theres no change in performance, but you will get better MPG.
Conversion kit cost about 1500$, or less if you can get stuff from junk yard off some GM pickup. And you can still sell parts left like carb etc..

Re: 355 carbed, want injection

if its an original (oem) carb cam then the tbi ecm will need to be tuned. i would by an ebl right from the get go and call s-10wildside at eficonnection and get all the pieces to build a stand alone tbi system. you will need to retrofit the fuel system for fuel injection. you may need to add the dual output speed sensor for the 92 police cars gm#10456131. i heard that gm is out of them but "jaguars that run" still have them listed as speedometer adapter (for vss output and for speedo cable function). all of the above should get you runiing good. or go to junkyard and swipe the entire vehicle harness from a tbi thirgen.

Re: 355 carbed, want injection

what about mpfi? would it run any better than tbi? if im gonna sink 1500 in some tbi stuff the extra 500 would seem worth it for a better product

Re: 355 carbed, want injection

its going to be your call. mpfi is by design a better system. im a huge fan of tbi
(literally and figuratively), but if you have the means to do mpfi, along with the ebl for 8 tpi injector upgrade, then the edelbrock vortec mpfi kit with the egr, which comes with a modified ecm (that you wont want to use)i believe. and the engine quest heads will make for a potent and very driveable combination.

it would be a damn shame to upgrade heads, intake, and induction type and not stab a cam in there. i guess you need to really think about what you want to do with this car. full on daily driver then yeah go ahead for mpfi upgrade. on the other hand 25-30 mpg even with 325 horse heads/cam engine with tbi/ebl is still cost effective and powerful. have you already done a full exhaust? headers, high flow cat,cat back?. id do the exhaust, the ebl ecm for tbi, eqheads, gmpp intake, and do your own tuning. as a tip don't buy the coated headers as the egr install kit will require welding to the #7 primary. then send them to be coated. a 3 wire o2 sensor will help keep the ecm happy with quicker sensor heatup and in any event a new o2 should be done any time you do head gaskets anyway. ive not ment to confuse only show some steps. cheapest way is just put head gaskets in, get the ebl ecm, do full exhaust and learn how to tune then go for heads, cam, and intake.

my state is emission testing exempt, so o2 sensors and computer stuff is long gone.......my setup is this: 76 350 with 416 heads, balanced eagle rotating assembley, holley 650 long tube headers true duals, no cats that dump before the rear axle, your standard ******* camaro set up, loud and nasty to the enviroment

Re: 355 carbed, want injection

i just realized that in post #6 i had responded to another thread in your thread, sorry bout that. if your gonna start with a clean slate and want to go mpfi then a 0411 LS generation pcm swap should be considered.

read this thread https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tpi/...-opinions.html

obd2 diagnostics, maf, excellent power and economy. electronic trans control, the list goes on.

Re: 355 carbed, want injection

no you would use your current trans if, desired ,and turn off all of the trans controls in the pcm then disable the flags in the pcm for code setting. it would be as if the pcm were running a vehicle with a manual trans.

Re: 355 carbed, want injection

personally, I think, if the sole reason of the swap would be to gain gas mileage, I don't think it's worth it. Unless you did it for super cheap. Otherwise the money you save on gas mileage will take a long time to catch up to the money you spend initially to swap it over to fuel injection. Just tune up the carb really well and you should be able to get decent mileage. If you put any stock fuel injection setup on it you might get worse mpg because the tune won't be for your car specifically.
