305 TBI: Air Cleaner to Open Element Install?

305 TBI: Air Cleaner to Open Element Install?
I have recently brought some life to this 91 Firebird I got finally going and had a questions. I am not to Mechanicly educated cause spent most of my time wiring lol. Weeeell what all steps are needed to make sure that the Open Element is installed correctly and all the new hoses needed are plugged and clamped right? I have got a hose on the left hand side that spits out white (Fuel) smelling smoke, does that hook up to the bottom of the Open Element? And is that a gas vapor line like he told me?
Please someone post some steps to make this make sense to me.

So your saying thomas I should hook that up to my open element and let it recycle the non-expended fuel? Someone have a picture of proper set up of this?

Re: 305 TBI: Air Cleaner to Open Element Install?
warhammer, like 89SR said, the crankcase breather hose comes from the right valve cover and it would be good to use a L or J hose and plug it to the base if your using a open element. Crankcase gasses dont need to be filtered for combustion so you just need to find a way to plug it to the base.
Dont use a drop base as in the instuction pics, use a flat base with 3" filter.
The hoses comming from the left should be plugged to the tb ports.
Post some pics like 89RS suggested if you have a particular set up, for clearness.

Re: 305 TBI: Air Cleaner to Open Element Install?
yea i know it a big 0 on HP!!!!!!!!!!!! but it dont put nasty crap in your intake or TB....my TB stays clean now that i dont have the crankcase dumping in it just a matter of my own opininon, to each there own
if they got the same TBI then i dont even need a pic, the links describe what i did, i used a edelbrock elite base/top 10" round 3 or 4" high K&N and put a K&N clamp on crankcase breather on the factory tube that i cut down to size

If one thinks it feels good checking his tidy hair by locking at his mirror clean tb. Yes, its his opinion.

Mine and most of the thirdgens had the stock air cleaner set up for over 15 years and never had to clean the tb.
Changing oil, oil filter and using a clean airfilter yes, but cleaning the tb? Come one.

Re: 305 TBI: Air Cleaner to Open Element Install?
good idea thomas! I just checked out my hair in my mirror finish tb. JK. but really warhammer just follow the links provided, you'll do fine. air cleaner mods are good place for beginners to start. also consider removing the gold like finished ring, you will notice it. also better to have complete member profile so we know where you live and what your state laws are. wouldnt wanna steer you wrong. gotta check hair again.......

Re: 305 TBI: Air Cleaner to Open Element Install?
Guys, Im really sorry about that stupid joke. I have lots of respect for people, but also for the little kids.
By using external crankcase breathers it is common to have some oil drops run over the valve cover, the engine block and fall on the floor if not completly evaporated by the time they reach the bottom of the oil pan.

Re: 305 TBI: Air Cleaner to Open Element Install?
its basicy a flat bottom breather, but here are the pics, you can see how the TBI has been modified some.........when i got the car from the original owner the whole TB was black and crusted with nasty stuff, and so was the intake runners were pretty nasty also, since i cleaned it out and ran the crankcase breather its stayed clean, haven had issues with oil drip, i do get some residue on the valve cover every so often so i do see where you are comming from, its just that everyone i know running HP motors are using external crankcase breathers so it seems like a good idea, but as i said to each there own and there was no offence taken, LOL if my friends took offence to my smarta** comments i wouldn't have any. i tell my friends, if im not giving smarta** comments, worry, it means i got a problem with you

Ok here is the top view, and then the hose from the motor that sticks out, I see a nipple underneath the air cleaner. I just wanted to make sure that I was hooking up the right hoses.... like I said, good with wires not mechanics.

warhammer, dont forget to put a breather filter back on the tube sticking out of the valve cover, if you dont connect a longer hose and plug it somewere in the base of the open element. Sand and dirt may get inside the engine.

Re: 305 TBI: Air Cleaner to Open Element Install?
Here you can see the stock one, you should already have this one. Plug it to the tube untill you find a hose to connect it to the base or a external breater filter.

Its not the best pic because of the shadow, but it will give you the idea what I intend with "plug".
