engine rebuild soon, please help!!!

Hey guys, I am looking for some sound advice. My current LO3 has 130,000 on the clock and is getting pretty tired, so this winter I am gonna have her rebuilt. I don't want to get into the 305 vs. 350 debate cause I'm gonna rebuild the 305. My question is... is it worth adding the stroker kit? Strokes it to what 337ci, adds tons of tourque, anyone know how much? Anyone have this done with theirs? I would get the stroker kit, add an LT-1 cam, new springs/ lifters, Edelbrock TBI manifold, and haven't decided what to do with the TBI itself.
DOes anyone see a problem with this?? Can I touch 300 HP with this setup (TBI upgrades too of course)? I think this would be a killer engine that can be considered reliable too. Am I wrong, someone talk me outta this otherwise I think I'll do it!! Please give me your feed back either way!!! Thanks.

Personally, I'm with you. I'm in the process or rebuilding my 305 (just got the heads/crank/block back from the machine shop about an hour ago). As for the stroker kit, I read somewhere here on thirdgen that you might have to machine the block for clearance with the longer stroke. Do a search for it, the post wasn't that long ago.

Don't forget, though, the L03 heads will be one of your weakest links! If you're are going to go that far with the 305, get a set of Worlds Torquer S/R 305 heads.

Sure, putting in a 350 would give you more power from the start and you could go farther with the 350 with less money. But I'm the type that like to be a little different and would rather build a nasty 305 just to "do it".

You do what you feel you want to do with the moeny you have to do it with. It will be so cool to blow the doors off of those 5.0 stangs and then tell them it was with the same size motor as they're running!!!

Good luck!

Mike

The stroker kit will increase the connecting rod speed which will in turn limit your reving even more than before. After a stroke the ratio between bore and stroke would be horific for performance but I imagnine you could squeez a little more performance out of it. Get the highest flowing heads with the smallest valves. Vortec heads are pretty good at low lift and there are some others.
Good luck, you definatly would be one of just a few to do this.

Anytime you change stroke, you have to check clearances in the block, since every block is different. A GOOD machine shop should be able to build it right. I applaud you guys for doing something different, but if that is your goal, why not build up a 283? That would be cool, and probably cheaper. Imagine beating a mustang with less than 300 cubes!

It is true that for the same money that you could build a 383, slap a carb on and go, but if you're set on the 305 stroker, you may be running very high compression with 305 heads, even the Torquer's. Play around with different piston/head combos to make sure your compression doesn't skyrocket when you put tight-chambered heads on.

With the stroker kit you will have to clearance the block because the rods now interfere. I have also heard that some oil pans need to be clearanced a little but not sure that is true. I think the stroker kit is cool, but you must have good flowing heads to feed the extra cubes. As for the lower redline, who cares, how often do you buzz to 7,000 on the street... never. For a driver, torque rules, and the stroker will deliver loads of it if built right.

So, would it be possible to buy the stroker kit for your 305, use it in a 305, and swap the crank into your new 350 (when the time comes)? Assuming that there's no cracks, etc.

If you want to keep the 5.0 for the sake of being differet, get a 327.

Tas... That's a thought. But if I was gonna buy a 327, I might as well buy a 350. What I was getting at was working with what I have now.

NTChrist.. Where in Cranston are you? Here's my email address... nitroburn@hotmail.com

I'll be dropping the fresh motor into the car next week, could always use a hand!

not really. There was a mechanics shop my family used next to my work but they went under recently.
