installed headers, now car wont start
all i can do is get it to back fire constantly. it will not run. i tried following the firing order listed in my crappy haynes manual and have tried several times. still no luck. i dont know what im doing wrong. i think i have the firring order wrong, but i cant be sure. how can i be sure im getting it right. the only things i removed from the car are 1. all spark plugs, spark plug wires, everything exuast related, altenator, a/c compressor, and emission equipment. emissions equipment re-installed, headers are emissions legal and a new cat was installed. question: if timming is adjusted by turring the distbutor, how can you be sure you are installing the wires on the proper terminals?

Re: installed headers, now car wont start
When reinstalling the distributor, pull the plug from #1 (drivers front just in case)
have someone TAP the starter until you feel pressure (or use a giant rachet on the crank bolt)
The instant you STOP feeling pressure when turning, you are it TDC on #1. Verify with your timing mark on your harmonic balancer.
At this time, you can reinstall the distributor trying to make the rotor point towards the passenger front of the car. Put the cap on and that post will be #1 plug. Then follow the rest...

Re: installed headers, now car wont start
The first thing to do would be to get the number 1 cylinder on top dead center on the compression stroke. the easiest way i did this was by turning the crank pulley with a rachet and it is a 5/8 bolt. You can hook up a tube in the spark plug cylinder to knpw when you are on top dead center. You will feel the air pushing on you finger. Once you have that done then reinstall the distributer and aim the rotor towards the number 1 plug. After that you can reinstall the cap and the terminal that lines up with the rotor is number one and then go counterclockwise form there. The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

Re: installed headers, now car wont start
if it ran before and you didnt remove the distributor, you need to bring #1 to TDC and then you can run your wires from there wherever #1 is from where the rotor points too..if you removed your distributor, which you said you didnt then you do the other way.
