Odd noise while accelerating...

When I rev the engine, engine sounds fine, but when I'm on the street and driving, the engine makes a sort of "ticking" noise. As soon as I let off the gas, it stops. Ccould this be one of the injectors or something? The car dosen't lack performance, just "ticks". Please help....

That could be valve tap or possibly pinging. Better hope its the latter, check your timing and upgrade your gas for that.

Could it be the speedometer? I did put in a 140mph one from a junkyard with a broken odometer and tripometer....but I'll check the timing today.

My stock speedometer ticks sometimes as well and my tripometer doesn't work. It was like that when i bought it. Mine doesn't tick all the time but just sometimes like starting up on a cold day and stuff. Check your speedo cable, it may be a little lose and in need of lubrication or something. Does it tick when you aren't driving (i.e. at a red light, when you crank it up)?

Well, I think that I have it isolated to what it is....the tickingis coming from the #7 cylinder, somewhere in the valvetrain. Could it be a loose rocker arm? anything else? The odd thing is that it is ONLY THAT CYLINDER! The rest are really quiet.

I agree with MightyMouse.. my RS does the exact same thing, I found it to be my drivers side exhaust manifold.. snug it back down, and it'll be quite for a couple of weeks, then it started up again.. I tighened it back up again today.. it's making be consider headers... Oh and since you think it's Cyl #7, tighten the back nuts first.. but make sure you spray on some WD40 or similar penitrating oil if it's all rusty. Does anyone have tips on how to stop the nuts from coming loose again & again..

Use 3/8 split lockwashers. They will help keep it from vibrating loose. Good luck!

The OE exhaust manifold has tabs that can be folded down to lock the bolts in place. It is hard as hell to do though (you'll notice the tabs when you relize that the socket won't go on.)

Yup, that quieted it down DRAMATICLY!!! Well, it is still there, but you have to listen for it really hard now....by the way, is the noise caused by leaking exhaust gas?

Ive had the same issues and continue to have them.

There are 2 distinguishable noises...
pinging..which only began to occur upon acceleration after i had the timing advanced 2 degrees.. (going to drop it one to cure the ailment)
pinging also only occured in the 1500-2500 RPM range...even after upgrading to 91 octane.

The other noise is definitely exhaust leak...usually most common at the collectors (donuts) just tighten all the bolts down, and if you are feeling a bit froggy, jump on replacing those gaskets too. as for the collectors...after the gaskets...locktite them puppies.

the only other noise i can think you may be referring to is the vroom sound....its supposed to do that.
