Vortec 310
For those of you that have not heard, the 1991 G20's 350 is beginning to rod knock badly. It is sitting around 200 K miles. Transmission was rebuilt about 6 months ago. Time for an engine. With gas probably hitting $3.00 a gallon before summer for 87, I set out for 275-300 HP, 20+ MPG highway, and HAS to run on 87. Other speculations are the stock 3.08 gears and the stock 1,600 rpm lockup torque converter in the 700r4. To reach this goal means great heads, a small cam, a compression ratio of about 9.5:1, and a smaller displacement engine. To fit the bill was a non-roller cam 305, bored .030" over, flattop hypereutetic pistons, balanced rotating assembly, ported 059 vortec heads, and a crane energizer 260 H10 camshaft. The intake is a standard Edelbrock performer Vortec.
SMOOTH IDLE, DAILY USAGE, FUEL ECONOMY, GOOD LOW END POWER, 1600-2200 CRUISE RPM, 8.0 TO 9.5 COMPRESSION RATIO ADVISED. (50 STATE LEGAL, PRE-COMPUTER, C.A.R.B. E.O. D-225-21)
Grind Number: 260 H10
Operating Range: 1000-4600 RPM
Duration Advertised: 260° Intake / 260° Exhaust
Duration @ .050'' Lift: 204° Intake / 204° Exhaust
Valve Lift w/1.6 Rockers: .455' Intake / .455'' Exhaust
Lobe Separation Angle: 110°
Max Lift Angle: 105° ATDC Intake / 115° BTDC Exhaust
Open/Close @.050'' Cam Lift: Intake - (3°) ATDC (opens) / 27° ABDC (closes)
Exhaust - 37° BBDC (opens) / (13°) BTDC (closes)
It should pull hard to about 5,000 rpm with the ported vortecs that are on it.

Re: Vortec 310
It RUNS!
Here is how it runs now. Despite 5,800 lbs of 1991 High Top conversion van, 3.08 gears, the stock 1,600 rpm torque converter, and the stock 3" single exhaust with the stock log style manifolds. The WOT shift points need to be brought closer to 5,500 rpm and the engine is begging for more fuel up top. VE table is getting closer, just need to get a wideband oxygen sensor in the loop to correct the rarely used WOT cells. What you hear is what it sounds like with the stock exhaust and only a 14x3 open element. Youtube has sucky audio synch, its not a hybrid, the engine did not start half-way through the intersection like it seems.

Re: Vortec 310
wow, this is my 2nd post here Fast, migrated from FSC...
my TBI just died also, I think a rod too, cause its knocking on bottom and on the top! I plan on rebuilding to a 383 stroker with vortec heads... gas mileage is still a concern, but hoping for 18 mpg...
here is the what i have so far: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tbi/...oker-plus.html
my questions was, did you tune that engine? it runs excellent, and sounds beastly, what kind of exhaust?
im starting to get a bit concerned about tuning my 383 stroker when it gets finished next week... im a complete newbie with tuneing..
