New engine choices for TBI, 302 or 327?

My old 305 with 220,000 miles just started knocking badly and I'm going to replace it. A buddy of mine has all the parts I need to put together either a 302 or a 327 engine, I'm going to be using a small roller cam along with my L98 heads on it and I was just looking for opinions on which would work better with the stock TBI system. I'm thinking the 327 would make more torque at lower RPM but the 302 would match the stock displacement better. I'll be keeping my T-5 trans. and I'm running 3.42 gears with posi-track rearend.

The 302 might be similar displacement but the power curve is WAY different. Don't expect to put either engines in and have a simple tune job. You'll need a custom chip. The 302 has the 4" bore, what you should be looking at is the bore:stroke ratio, not just displacement. The 302 will rev a lot higher than the 305 and will demand more fuel. The pump shot will also need to be adjusted since the car will want to rev up faster. If you don't plan on getting a chip or start programming your own then I can't really say much else. The 350 has a closer bore:stroke ration that the 327 and 302 so that would be your best bet. You'll need 55 injectors and a custom chip. Plan this out a little more and keep us updated with your choices. E-mail me if you want to talk to me about custom chips.

if you want to make NA(no adder) power with a 302 or 327 you shouldn't use a hydraulic roller cam. Hydraulic roller cam's limit is about 6500. A built 302 should go 8000+ and a built 327 can go 8000- as well. And the other downside to these fine engines is that since they rev so high you need big gears to get going. BUT when you put bigger gears in they overall get physicly weaker. So you'll be putting weak 4.11s, 4.30, or 4.56s in a a weak 10 bolt.

Gotta frigin love a truly snotted-out 302, man. Sing like the wind!!!

EDIT: He's never gonna see 8 grand with TBI, anyhow. Use the 327 and turn up the fuel pressure a little. The 302 is no good for a street car unless you like a winder and IMO, TBI is probably not a good choice for that. Sounds like you just want to get up and running so I say 327.

Do it, and it will run...

If all else is equal like having the same cam and compression the 302 would be so close to the 305 I don't think you would notice much of a difference between the two. Now when you up graded to a better cam, heads, intake and headers you might give away a little low rpm tq for some high rpm hp with the 302. If you were to up grade to longer 6" rods and run some aluminum L98 corvette heads you could run 11.0/1 CR on 87oct gas and still have your low end tq and high end hp too, as long as you don't run a radical cam.

Car: 92 Chevy 1500
Engine: 350 TBI
Transmission: TH-700R4
It depends on the RPM range you want to turn. My uncle had a 69 Z28 with the DZ 302. It came with a solid lift cam from the factory. He shifted it at 8 grand, but the car was okay in the quater, but it didn't start pulling until 4 grand. The 302 was made to be kept in the high RPM range, but the 327 has a longer stroke and has more bottom end. It all depends on your tastes. My dad ran 12.30's with a solid lift 327 in the Nova. It had a 650 double pump and he shifted at 6800(stock bottom end).
