The Boat engine Combo

Here is the boat engine combo that I talked about in the "How far will TBI go" thread. It's nothing fancy, but it's going to have a bunch of torque, and be relible. ( they last over 1000 hours in a boat).

'96-'98 truck Vortec stock long block

Edelbrock RPM manifold

454 TB unit

85 lb/hr injectors

Cast Iron, water jacketed manifolds

custom burned prom

There it is. I think you could EASILY reproduce this package with all of the above, except headers instead of manifolds. This is such a conservative and reliable package, and 310 hp is plenty(to start with).

------------------
'83 Trans Am: 400 CID oil burning junkyard long block, 224/234 crane cam, Summit aluminum roller rockers, hand ported intake, home bored 2.09" (53mm) throttle bodies, MSD 454 injectors(75 lb/hr), Holley 255LPH fuel pump, custum modded FPR, Edelbrock TES headers, SLP 3" stainless steel cat back, stock ECM & chip. Borg/Warner T-5 World Class, 12" Corvette rotors and clipers, GTA 16" wheels, South Side Machine subframe connectors, 1LE sway bars, 3.45 ring and pinion, Alpine sound.
Best E.T. 13.532
Best MPH 102.24

No, really? I made more than 300hp dynoed with a 1-11/16" TBI unit and 55pph injectors. Go figure.

FAst.. didnt you run those at 20 psi? those injectors at 20 psi flow about 78Lbs/hr

so 85 lbs/hr injectors would work very similarly...

I apparently need 90pph injector at about 15psi to make my Hot Cam happy if/when I put it back in.

Still working on a 2" with the 90pph injectors?

Pablo/anyone: do you know the injector numbers on the 90pph injectors?

snuf might have them
if your pump is capable, those 55 lb injectors are good till about 70 psi believe it or not. You can ask on the diy-efi list. a dude has a test bench for them

Tom, so indmar came through and answered the question. Thats great. Do you or anyone else know what cam this engine uses? It would also be very interesting to find out who does Indmar's custom proms. Whoever does it, must be pretty good cause those guys are particular. If they gave you this stuff they might answer a few more questions. Let us know if you find out. thanks very much......bob

No, Indmar did not come through. Either they are lame, or their web site "contact us" link doesn't work properly. I talked to my local Mastercraft dealer, Utah Water Sports.

The entire long block is a STOCK truck vortec 350, therefore, cam is the stock GM truck roller cam '96-'98.(the Vortec 305 has the same cam BTW) I tried to get the lift and duration from my local Chevy dealer, but all their books have is lift specs. The lifts are;
Intake: .411"
Exhaust: .430"

The duration should work out pretty close to 200(I), 210(E) but again I couldn't get that number. Like the rest of the motor, this is a conservative, reliable cam.

The computer is a joint effort between GM and Indmar. I suspect GM builds the unit, and Indmar does the calibration.

I think that this is an interesting engine to look at for all TBI'ers. Think about this; take this truck engine. With a tuned composite intake, port injection, 74mm throttle body the engine is rated at 255 hp. Now take the engine out of the truck, remove ALL of the injection, intake and exhaust manifolds. Install it in a boat with the Performer RPM manifold, 454 TB, a custom prom to run it, and a new set of cast iron exhaust manifolds, and viola, 55 more horse power. And I KNOW the 55 hp didn't come from the boat's exhaust. Also, the truck doesn't have a smog pump, so the boat's variation doesn't gain any advantage because it lacks one. Score one for TBI?

Now that sounds more like the indmar I used to know. Anyway, sounds like a good set up.
Only problem I have with it is running EGR which is required here in colorado. It can be done but is a PITA with brackets, fuel lines, heater hoses, brake vacuum hose, and
custom EGR hose and fitting for headers. Still, its probably worth it. thanks for checking this out.........bob

Anybody looked into the new Edelbrock crate engines. They use new gm crate shortblocks with edelbrock cam, heads and choices in intakes. They offer a 310hp 8.5 to 1 compression engine that gives the 310hp with 87 octane. Would be nice with a blower on it. A 320hp 9 to 1 and a 408hp 9.5 to 1 built on a zz4 short block.

This info came from Sallee Chevrolet. I was also told that those specs are off a tad:

I just thought you might like to know that your cam specs are a wee bit off (but close) IIRC; I think the lift is around .418"/.430", and the duration is 191id/196ed @ .050" lift and the LSA is 111.5 deg. </font>
