Performance chip..is it worth the buck?
I recently had a talk with a guy that rebuilds car and he advised me to get a performance chip on my computer. He said that every other mod would be useless if the old computer is still telling the car to do the stock procedures. It seems to make sense to me but i would like a little more input....Is it worth it and were can i get one and what do they usaully sell for??

Unless you've already done at least headers and an open element, it's not worth the money. Even then, the gain is really minimal. The time that you really need an aftermarket PROM is when you replace heads, new cam etc...

An aftermarket PROM like from Hypertech or JET does VERY little for your car. They add a few degrees timing and turn the fans on sooner. Thats stuff you can do yourself. Save your money for real mods.

91Z is right.I bought hyprtech street and the only thing I like is my gas milage. When I bought the car I would get 19 mpg.Now I get 20 if I keep my foot out of it.On long trips I get 23 mpg doing 70mph. Before it would get around 21.For power I would suggest an open elenment, headers, ect.

I put on a HyperTech Thermomaster Fuel chip on my car, part # 11182, and I LOVE IT! I noticed a huge difference, I already had headers on it, but it overall helped everything, I would recommend it, sorry to disagree guys, but it definately helped me

Nate Well I haven't tried a Thermo.Maybe better on power, but I talked to Hypertech since their only a about 2 hours awayand they suggested the street runner.I did buy the chip from Summit because it was cheaper.Maybe if you buy it from Hypertech it would be better, just a thought though.

If you are noticing a mileage improvment its not because of the hypertech chip. Their off the shelf calibrations (read: street legal) do not do a thing to part throttle calibration. THey only mess with WOT and only extremely mildly at that.
there is a difference between off the shelp "performance chips"
and a custom chip
a custom chip is taylored to the modifications you have done to your engine. you wont really need one of these until you start doing things like cam, heads, etc
dont waste your money

I've got a Thermomaster Chip in my wife's '91, it makes very little difference in power on a stock engine & setup. Unless
you're going to put a better cam, heads, headers, better cold air intake or open element on that engine & yadi yadi yah, don't bother. I got suckered by the marketing aspect, that's why i've got one with no other mods. I can roast the tires medium-well and that's about it.
