9 inch vs 14 inc air cleaner...

right now i have a k&n open air cleaner on the car(9 in.) i was considering getting the big 14 inch one with the filter top, and i'm trying to justify spending the $140 bucks it costs.

does anybody have any experience with the 14 inch versus the 9 inch. is there much performance gain? also what about the new open element top piece, anybody got that, any good?

space isn't an issue, since i have the cowl hood. thanks.

$140???? where are you so I can hold a garage sale?

I got my 14x2.25" PAW open element for $17(paper element). A couple weeks later I got a 14x3" k&N for like $35

Summit has there cloth element and 14" drop base air cleaner for only $15 if you don't mind looking at Summit every time you open your hood. I couldn't care less. $140 is way too exensive for any air cleaner, heck, that sounds like a new dual snorkel air cleaner with all parts.

ahh I missed the part that said open filter top. thats why it would be so much. 14x3 is a lot of area, you wouldn't need that top.

The PAW brand is very clean looking, chrome, no letters, slightly coned upward. I needed a new "carb stud" for it to fit. the original was too short. I had to run the chrome lid up side down when I bought the 14x3 filter so I could get to work so I could put in the new stud.

There's a few cheaper ones.

Edlebrock and www.sbfilters.com both make cloth filters

the pricing stuff was just off the top of my head. i'm not worried about that, so much as is there any real performance gain with the 14 inch air cleaner. or should i just maybe buy an open top for my 9 in. there like $30.

i think that the 14" is overkill for our cars. i have seen a million cars that make tons of horsepower with only a little 9" one. and i see it a LOT...they always have smaller air filters than the 14"x3" on my car.

the k&n filter lid or whatever the hell it is is also overkill. i bet that the 14x3 with that top will floe like 2 thousand cfm or somthing insane like that. its just wayyy too much air than most of us need. if you like the way it looks, then go for it, but as far as performance gains, i dont think you need it.

just my 2 cents.
