How To Degrease An LO3 Motor

I am in NEED of a degreasing to my engine bay....but with an LO3 how would I go about doing this....I was thinking about using the stock snorkel and covering up the intake throttle body. What to do please let me know.

You need a lot of rags and a lot of engine degreaser. Foamy Engine brite works well. Many will spray that on and then rinse the engine down with water (with the engine cool of course). I do not like to "hose" down any motor. I use a lot of elbow grease and work on various small areas at one time.

Yeah, not to sure I want to hose it down that much either. So guess I'll look into this foamy stuff....stupid question, what kind or rags are good to use? Like lets say for leaving no material behind after cleaning....I usually see them in blue (maybe micro-fiber)?

How about Meguiars Super Degreaser.....and just use a spray bottle?

its pretty simple take of the open element/stock aircleaner use a shop rag for the breather
and put a towel over the tbi unit and spray the whole engine bay down with degreaser then wait a min for it to soke in
then hose it off with a standard garden hose do not use high pressure from a pressure washer try not to directly spray the towel but going around the base of the intake is fine
some black paint may come off the manifold

dry it off with an air hose or a towel works fine

then every time after this you should only need to lightly hose off the engine bay when you wash your car

purple power degreaser works great its what i use at work you can find it at autozone or advance auto or the like
i do detailing for a living and this makes the jobs of rims and engines easy

A good CHEAP way of doing it is getting a big bottle of Mean Green and about 2 cans of oven degreaser from any Family Dollar or Dollar General for five bucks.Let you engine run alittle while to get it warm. Get your hose if you have a spray nozzle on try to use a good light spray to get everything wet (Be mindful of all your electrical stuff). When you get everything good and sprayed off just put the mean green in a spray bottle and give everything a good coat of it.Let it sit for about 5 minutes and spray off, should help get most of the surface gunk off,for the hard parts use the oven degreaser.Don't let it sit for to long on the rubber or plastic parts use it primarily on the engine.

Same as any other.

Take it to the quarter car wash. Take a tool for removing the dist cap with you, in case you get water in it; and a rag or something to dry it out with. On the way, stop and pick up a couple of cans of Gunk Engine Bright engine degreaser, or the store brand of the same thing (basically diesel fuel in a spray can). Park your car in the car wash bay, turn it off, open the hood, take off the air cleaner, and wait about 10 minutes or so for the exhaust to cool down a bit. Then spray every bit of the motor you can get to, with one can of the degreaser. Concentrate particularly on areas of the motor that always get built up real bad with the ***; under the outer edge of the valve covers, behind the PS pump, the top of the bell hsg behind the dist, etc. Wait another 5 or 10 minutes; then dose it with the other can. Then use the "wash" function to wash the engine off; see if it's clean enough. If not, use the "pre-soak" or "engine" or "tire" function, whatever gives a low pressure spray of high concentration of soap; soak it good; wait a bit; then wash it again. Wash the air cleaner housing somewhere along the way. Finish up with the "wax" function to help keep rust down.

Obviously, don't spray water down the TBI; and don't shoot water straight at the distributor cap. You can clean GENTLY around the base of it, but even then, be careful not to get water in it. Don't spray the high pressure spray right at any sensors, especially not the CTS up on the top front of the intake. If it won't start back up after you get done, pop the dist cap off and dry the cap and the rotor, let it sit open for a bit so any water in it can dry out, then put it back together and try it again.

I can't even IMAGINE trying to clean up a whole funky motor with a rag. That sounds depressingly like WORK. Ugh.

What sofakingdom said.....Thats the best way..I do mine quite often, and have never had a problem with it starting or any thing else..The only thing I do different is the first time I spray the gunk on then drive it to the car wash...After you have it clean it is easy to keep it that way..Sure makes it alot nicer to work on when you can see the motor, and also not get your hands dirty....I have pretty much done the whole under carriage this way....Good luck, Tom
