Going Carb, need some advice!

Ok I know this was very hard for me to post up on here, but I have decided to leave the EFI world and go to carb. Alright my engine is a 1992 Camaro L03, which is completley rebuilt with centerbolt (187) heads, stock tbi, edelbrock performer tbi manifold, comp cam (a little larger than the LT1 cam) , comp cam springs, 3in pacetter catback. I have a custom burned chip by Brian at TBIchips.com and the car runs awesome. But I want more power. I know i could get more out of TBI, but carb is just cheaper to make horsepower out of due to my money shortage right now. Don't get me wrong the tbi system is great and put out some serious torque but laged on the top end due to the lack of fuel and the restrictive (187) heads, and that I don't have headers because my Dad says they leak. I am going to get headers though because there are some that don't leak like Mac's and SLP and Hooker's 2055, I just need to get good evidence to show him that headers due make a large difference in power. So my Dad and I have both read the 'EFI to Carb on your third gen Camaro' in the tech articles. I am defiantly getting different heads. I want the 601 castings but will they fit on my block? And what intake manifold should I run and for the centerbolt or older valve covers? Is their a certain year I should I look for the 601s? I will be having these heads proted and machined. I am just worried that I will get the wrong intake for the heads. And on to the distributor what do you think? For the fuel pressure regulator I will be running the Mallory 3 port #4309. I want to run a Edelebrock intake manifold and a Edelbrock Carb. So what intake would work and what carb would work? Would a 650cfm doublepumper work good for this combination? If you could give the item's part number or if you find them on ebay or the internet just put the link on here so I can save it in my ebay and buy it when I get eveything I need. Sorry if this sounds confusing but I just need to figure out all the parts I need to do this swap from TBI to Carb. If there is anything I am missing please inform me because I want this swap to go good and with good results.
Thanks guys,
Cory Mohr

It will cost you less to enter the world of Prom Tuning than swapping to a carb.

CONCENTRATE ON THE EXHAUST

You would be suprised what an exhaust system from the head ports back would do for your car.

The 187s are not holding you back at this power level.

The TBI is not holding you back at this power level.

601s are excellent heads for making power on a 305 or even a dished piston 350 for that matter.

I did my own port work on my previous sets. I won't even buy anything but the 601s now for 305s. Unless a set of ZZ4 aluminum heads falls my way affordibly.

I ported mine, cut them for 1.94/1.60" valves, and did the 5 angle valve job myself. Borrowed some workspace and tools from a friend that ran a machine shop at the time.

Thanks Fast for the 601 info. I am defiantly getting them but I am still not sure what years I should look for. I am also getting headers so you don't have to worry about that. What brand do you recommend? I'm sorry but I'm still going carb, so I still need all the info I asked for in my first post. I just need someone to give me links to everything that would work together on my car and would make my carb swap complete. I would like the intake manifold and carb Edelbrock. And I have no idea what distributor I should get. So I need some help!
Thanks,
Cory Mohr

1982-1984 Fullsize Vans had them for Certain. My 1983 had them. I think they were used on some 267s as well. So from 1981-1986 in Vans/Trucks. Some Monte Carlo SS's had the 601s as well.

Hooker 2460s come with 1 5/8" primaries and 3" collectors and are a good shorty style header for a F-car.

The carb swap will take alot of work, but if you are sure you want to go through with it, look on the carb board. There are lots of documented conversions there.

Basically you need a Carb, an intake, a Distributor, a Bypass style fuel pressure regulator, a TCC lockup kit, a throttle cable, TV cable, throttle cable bracket

Personally I would use an Edelbrock Performer RPM Spread bore intake and a Q-Jet carb. Good fuel mileage, good throttle response, and still retain good HP.

Thanks a lot fast. And your posts have gotten me thinking. I mean I can't decide what I want a carb or stay TBI. But I think I might stay TBI now, but if I do I will add the thw Mac headers and y-pipe and I will also be adding a Nitrous Works TBI kit. What should this bring the power up to right now. But my main concern right now is two things is my heads I know I have heard they can handle 300hp but what do you Fast should I just pull them off and drop a set of 601s on there and just be done with it? Do you think the head swap would be in need of another burned chip? I had the chip burned for headers so those won't affect it. I just want to get in the 13s.

I think you will get to the 13s NA if you put togather the right package of modifications.

Full exhaust, PORTED 601 heads, Mildish Roller cam, intake work, CHIP TUNING, Gears, and a nice 2,800 rpm converter.

The head swap will DEFINATELY need tuning. Just ask Dewey316 how much his ported 416s changed his tune.

The nitrous will be the icing on the cake.
