help modding a 91 camaro RS

my friend has a 91 camaro RS w/ the 305 TBI engine. his current mods are flowmaster catback, offroad ypipe, and some very minimal mods to the engine.

he wants to do all the free mods first, what are the good free mods for this engine??

he wants a very nice set of heads (i dont know who makes good ones for these cars, i only know about LS1's)... he wants a really good strong midrange hp/tq cam to match up with the heads. (i heard some stuff about the afr heads and lt4 hotcam, so info on those might be good too.. but any info is appreciated)

he doesnt want to do headers, but maybe we can convince him to do them.

what is a good intake manifold for his car? someone was mentioning holley or edelbrock?

he is also getting suspension, pulleys, fans.. he wants some induction, what can we do for that? maybe some kind of cold air or ram air kit?

he just basically make the car pretty fast, but very streetable.. (he wont go to the track much)..

thanks for all the help, please reply ASAP!

you cant put LS1 heads on a 305, totally different setup....LS1 heads only fit on LS1s. LT4 HOT cam is too big, get the edelbrock TBI intake and DEFINATELY put headers on it, If you wanna go faster and you got the dough.....build a bigger small block!

convince him to do headers. they are the best bang for buck mod and will help out any other hell do in the future. manifold should be single plane, theres a few threads that you can find within the last 15 days that explain why on this one. he can do the ultimate tbi mods for free. adjust the fuel pressure for free. better bet for ease of adjustment would be putting in an external regulator and putting a blockoff plate on where the stock reg is. there is also plenty of info here if you do a search on that. lt1 cam is a winner it seems for our cars. custom chip always helps. subframe connectors and a strut tower brace. have him upgrade gears to 3.73 or 3.42 if he doesnt have already. he can get a powertrax posi for what im told yeilds amazing results for traction. check out spohns site ad for more suspension stuff. always support out sponsors here at thirdgen. dont let him buyinto the 160 stat crap. still with 190 or 180 if he wants a little lower. have him wire a switch to the radiator fan so he has more control there. as for induction. just an open element is fine, dont worry about cold air. its an lo3 . and it wont make large noticable difference. heads. just do a search. you can sorta see what people already have and what they like that way. i have stock heads and wouldnt feel right recomending anything i havent seen overwelmingly used here or that i havent tried myself. hope this helps. have him get on here and hang with us. we know tbi. and we know l03's

welcome to thirdgen.

I just installed a 160 thermo and noticed a difference. my temps have gone from 210* to 150*-160* range. The old one said 180* on it but maybe it was a 195* one in disguise.

I have an open Formula hood and can tell that cold air makes a big difference if you want to talk him into getting a Cowl hood(which looks kick *** on 3rdgen camaros anyway). If he doesn't want headers (cant imagine why not) he can get TPI exaust maifolds and an SLP Y pipe.

taz. i remember pablo speaking that 160 was great for combustion yada yada and other parts of the engine. but not a correct temp for the oil to be at for best lubrication therfor causing increased wear. this hypothesis or whatever he was pulling his facts etc. from make sense to me. i took mine out this last winter, not because of that however, but because it was colder than a frozen turd in antartica here and it took 20 minutes for my car to hit 160 even. a very bad thing for engine, i could tell it was getting angry at me for not letting it warm up.

It's so cold here I blocked off most of the front of my radiator. It still takes forever to warm up to 160. I can't get this engine warm and the 427 overheats, go figure.

I live in L.A. it was 80* most of my winter break and dito for Pablo.

160* seems fine for me. Any colder and it would be too cold I think. If there was a 170* thermo it would be perfect. My 180* had the car at one line below 220* and I know that wasn't good.

replaced fuel filter
replaced distributer cap

soooo she is running alot smoother... he has pulleys on the way, and the 160 thermostat... sound good so far? he is thinking of ordering headers next week.

sounds good.....headers should make a nice boost and may I also advise a gear swap to a set of 3.73s with a posi. Pretty much all RSs had 2.73s stock.

i have a 91 RS.. cheap good mod that he should do is an open element air cleaner if for nothing else do it for the sound... either 3.42's or 3.73's will be a good improvement too i plan on putting mine on soon...

I would definitely do all the free mods in the tech articles section...then go to steves website here: http://members.nbci.com/scauffiel/index.htm Hes got some great info on his webpage. I am going to be building a cold air box very similar to his as soon as i get this damn shift kit finished. Also make a tbi and injector spacer for next to nothing...steve has info on those on his website also. Steve, i hope you dont mind me sharing your site, Ive just found it so informative

Same here! I just got a '91 RS and have been disappointed in its performance after driving an '85 Z28 with a modded TPI 305 for the last 3 years. The first mod I did to the LO3 was an Edelbrock chrome open element filter. I noticed a slight performance gain and it looks cool. Gears are in the near future!

Tas and Snuffles, you are both right. And Tas, believe it or not there is a 170 degree thermostat that will fit our cars. But you are right, 170 is just about the perfect one to get. I don't have one, but I understand that GM has one available at most any of thier parts counters. I forget the part number, but I found it on someone's site and called Dal to see if it was good. He said it was and that he had plenty in stock. If anybody know, throw it up here to be archived.

Oh yeah, and the first mod should be an open element. Who cares if you fell a gain or not, it really puts a smile on your face! That's what I'm in this for. Speed isn't everything. Cause when your alone on the road, with just you and your car, it's how happy you are, and you alone.
