TBI on HT383?
HI new mwmber here, I have been told at a couple other boards I belong to that if I want to get the inside track on TBI this is the place to come so here I am. I did several searches and came close to what I was looking for but no cigar. I am building what is basically a clone of an HT383 crate engine for my '89 C1500 to replace the 4.3 TBI and since I'm getttin' old and don't like things any more complicated than they have to be I plan to run TBI on my 383. Has anyone had any experience putting TBI on an HT383? I was going to run a Performer intake with an adapter but in the interest of gas mileage have decided I want to keep the EGR so I'll be selling the Performer and getting the GMPP TBI Vortec manifold. This engine should make peak TQ about 3500 although the torque curve below that is pretty much a flat line and peak HP about 4500 so I'm thinking a stock 350 TB and injectors might do or possibly injectors for a 9C1 Caprice. Any thoughts?
You're probably wondering why I'm building a 383 for MPG's.... long story but the short version is that I learned years ago that medium displacemnt V-8s built for low and mid range torque are capable of very good mileage in a heavy vehicle, anybody that has ever owned a '67-'69 Pontiac with the 10.5 to 1 400 2 Bbl. knows what I'm talking about. But. I digress. The truck has a Getrag 5 speed and currently 3.42 gears but I also have a 2.73, a 3.08 and a 3.73 gear set to play with. I've been told mileage in the low to mid-20's is possible in a pickup with a mild 383 if you hit the right combo and still have decent performance. I had a 383 back in the 80's in my '72 Chevelle SS and even with a lumpy cam, single plane intake, Holley DP, TH400 and 3.73 gears it got 16 MPG if I stayed out of it. OK so that rarely happened but it was capable of it. Appreciate any input.
