TPI manf engine with TBI setup...chip problems....

ok, heres the deal, my 305 died so put a 350 in it, the way i did this was just walk up to the counter and say, i want a 350 chevy for a 92 car, so thats what he gave me....
a year later im still struggling with this car....
it seems that i would have gotta an L98 engine right...well i cant find a year that they manufactured a L98 with a TBI, so my problem is, ive tried finding chips for this engine in this year, in tbi, i just cant find one thats a correct one... is this the right board? i hope so... but any of you guys that have swapped, please drop me a line so i can see what you guys did.... my car runs like....well....bad heh

Well there are a few problems. There was never a 350 TBI motor in 3rd gens. The second thing is that the L98 is the 350 TPI motor. If they gave you a 350 block it is most likely an LO5 (350 TBI from caprice and some trucks) or an L98 longblock. They could have even given you a flat tappet grabage motor that doesn't have a cam that TBI systems like. What did you pay for it? Anywhoo, you will no find an off the shelf chip for your new combo. You will have to burn a new one yourself or have it done for you.

When I swapped my 350 in I purchased a cop car chip from tbichips.com, a knock sensor from a 350 caprice, and an ECS module from a 350 caprice. At first I had just the cop car chip and it run ok but idled funny and would not operate at high rpms well but after I got the knock sensor and ECS module the car ran like a champ. Oh and also you need 350 injectors aswell. Good Luck.

Then it is time to learn how to do it yourself. If you just can't fathum that then you are going to have to work with brian over there. He is really good with his customers but there is no real way to tune a car though mail order chips alone.

lol, I could have told you this earlier.
DIY of go carb, it's that simple. Or spend money and have a tuner tune your car on a dyno or at LEAST in person with proper tools.

A L98's cam and heads are different than any TBI equipped car. Thats the exact same problem I ran into with my car. Ran a 15.9 with cam/headers/exhaust/3.42 posi. I didnt realise the tuning was THAT off. The car would run rich and bog off the line and lean out at the top of the powerband.
