very rough idle

OK So I was driving from NC to MD tonight, pull over to get gas and my car is idling badly, it doesnt want to go below at least 1200RPM without idling real rough. No SES light. I did just change my tranny fluid and filter, new Dexron/Mercon III. I changed that last weekend and there were no leaks.
Well I get back and I see that there is fluid on the crossmember and it doesnt smell good from the rear of my car. I drove 300 miles. When the car is in park it still idles bad. Any suggestions. Did I screw the tranny? If I drive my car will shake as well. I swear it was a good seal with the pan.

Oh and one more thing, I got pulled over because I have no turn signals, brake lights, or just rear lights in general. It seems my car just went to crap in a day.

For a starter, check the egr. Poor idle with ok operation everywhere else is a textbook example of a leaking egr valve. Not saying thats definatly what it is, but it will cause your symptoms.

A vacuum leak can cause a high idle and rough running because it is unmetered air entering into your motor. What fluid did you see on the cross memeber. We need more details on that.

Well I cannot really tell what kind of fluid it is, it was raining last night so its still wet under there, it doesnt smell like transmission fluid or look like it at all, its black, not much of it. However I have had a leak before, might be my TC seal, there has been build up of grit on the crossmember because of that. I check my levels, Tranny fluid little, low but I just started my car didnt drive it, Motor Oil OK. How do I go about checking my EGR and Vaccuum lines? I dont have my Haynes book with me.

To check your vaccum lines you just need to follow your gingers a long them and look for splits and cracks. It is a tedious job but really the onlk way to find leaks. You could use a doctors stethescope and follow the lines while the car is running and listen for hissing sounds. Checking the egr is fairly simple and will be described in your manual. You have to connect a vacuum source to it and make sure it opens and closes like it should for certian levels of vacuum.

Well I followed the lines. The thing next to the EGR canister that depresses when the throttle is pushed on the drivers side, well I followed the lines to the intake manifold and part of the line was rotted. The part that goes into the intake manifold. I cut off the end and pushed it back on. Still A rough idle, engine just shakes, it does idle at 600 but not good. Also, My manual doesnt say anything about EGR.
