TBI performance question

I have a friend with a 87 camaro with a 91 305 TBI and a 700R4. He just wanted to know what kind of hp he's pushing with his set up. He's got all the Ultimate TBI Mods, an open element air cleaner with K&N, and LongTube Headers with turndowns. I really don't know what to tell him since I've never really dealt with TBI before. I would guess it would put him somewhere in the mid-high 15's? Thanks.

That seems about right. He's probably got a little more than 200 hp now.

I suggested an LT1 cam. I hear a lot about people using them in 305's.

it is very popular because they are very tunable and cam be had for less than $50. They are a really great match for a 305TBI.

poor newbies

don't fret, it's just a cam removed from a 93-97 f-car. they sell for around $50. very common mod, and because it's a cam, it's very straight forward.

There are many LT1 cams to choose from. They came in f-bodies, vettes and B-bodies (caprice classics and Impalas). When people of those cars do a cam swap they have no need for the stock one and they sell it. The f-body and vette cams were the biggest and only changed slightly over the years. The 1994 and 1995 cams were the biggest. The b-body cams were a bit smaller with a little tigher LSA but still great to use in a mild 305/350 set-up. I am using one out of a 1996 Impala SS. You can use any of these cams in your truck if it is a roller set-up. I always get confused which truck motors cam with roller cams. If your truck does not have a roller cam than you cannot use this cam. Fear not because there are trillions of other choices to make.

I've got a 96 vortec moter out of a Suv. In trucks after 96 got roller cams but before 96 did'nt on like cars which I've be told have roller cam's

I realy like the vortec motor but could not get it to run and know
that I needed to burn a chip so I going for the 330-350 hp mark
and put a stock 350 backin for know that was bored 0.60 over and has a RV cam in it.

The vortec ran better and alot stonger on the top.

Can wait tell summer to do so more mods and back in it go's

If you want a brand new cam with specs similar to the LT1 cam, and you don't want to change valve springs Click here

It's the second one from the bottom.

Well the second cam listed in that bottom table has .480 lift which is to much for stock heads.

I think he was talking about the second one from the bottom of the page. the specs are .410/.424 lift and 202/207 duration. That would be a pretty good cam to keep stock springs and not mess with chips too much. At least I would think...never done it yet but would really like to.

Well you are going to have to burn you own chips regaurdless of what cam you go with. The stock bin can barely support what it has from the factory. Even a full exhuast can throw things off. Those specs are nice but not worth it if you ask me. A LT1 cam is much bigger and withing the realms of tunability. It is also a fraction of the cost. Also, unless your stock springs have less than 40k miles on them you want to replace them. A new cam and old springs are not a good mix.
