FAQ - Heat stove pipe coming from exhaust manifold to stock aircleaner
I suppose I should add this to the open element article, but for now... It is the main question that people email me with on a pretty regular basis for a while now, I see the cause for concern but here's the question and answer...
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was wondering what I'm supposed to do about the gaping hole in the exhaust manifold and possible emissions violations because of the removal of the ducting tht goes from the manifold to the air cleaner assembly.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANSWER:
There is no gaping hole. take off the hose and look very closely at what is under it. NOTHING.
The only thing that tube does is HELP hot air get into the aircleaner on cold startups. Thats it. Exhaust gas DOES NOT flow through that hose... just hot air that builds up around the manifolds.
Emissions vary, some states dont let you touch ANYTHING, check this out on your own.

just take the case off the manifold that the tube plugs into. its 2 halves sandwiched onto the manifold. looks nicer too

you CAN remove it. simply insert a screwdriver in between the seem and pry it apart...
however, please keep in mind that it IS a effective heatshield.
i have run without it, and i never noticed any ill effects from it, and older cars used to always come without it, but i would be extra cautious about your spark plug wire routing after performing that mod.
and if you do remove the manifold to do it, you can use manifold paints to make the bare casting look better. however, no NOT use "high temp" spray paint, as that WILL burn off and make the entire piece look like cr@p anyway...

I tried prying off those heatshields... after about an hour of trying to break those spot welds I gave up and took off the manifold.

just move the IAT sensor to the firewall somewhere and affix with a zip tie or whatever else will hold it there. If your going to be running some sort of cold air induction then youd want to mount the sensor in the airbox itself. Its either something like 3/8 or 1/2 NPT thread, cant remember. As for the vacuum line that supplies vacuum to the valve in the aircleaner neck, just plug the vacuum port on the tbi where it mounts up with a vacuum plug

if you've taken that tube out then you might as well get some pliers and take the rivet out of the valve directly above it and remove that too. I took out the valve and duct taped off all the holes so it only sucks cool air.

yeah began as a test fit but I left it. I still have dreams of cutting a round piece of aluminum and JB Welding it over the opening and painting it, and also filling in the rivet holes. It's only in my truck, not like it's something I care too much about. Hey, it works. You'll hate me but guess where I'm getting the round piece of aluminum from.... Mr. Budweiser. Hey what do you want I grew up watching the A-Team, lol
Not sure if it's still in there but if you look at my readers ride pics you'll see zip ties holding on my washer bottle. Just know that I replaced that with 1" aluminum bar stock.

I may be wrong, but I know for a fact my SLP headers are 50-state legal and don't have this connection.

they are 50 state legal for TPI, i believe technicly for TBI you do need the heat stove. i can't image anyone would fail you for it, if you had TPI legal headers on there, most of them wouldn't know there was supposed to be anything there to begin with.
i know the edelebrock for TBI do have the head stove attachment on them. and SLP doesn't make a 'TBI' header.

you could mount it somewhere underhood. or you could make a hole in the bottom of the air cleaner and snap it in.
what that sensor does is tell the computer what the temp of the incoming air is. if you are getting your air from underhood, you can leave it in a safe place.... prefably not over the headers or touching metal.
if you have some sort of cold air intake, i would put it in the path of that.
that tube that comes off the valve cover is the inlet for your crankcase vent. in stock form, it connected to the air cleaner and had a small foam filter clipped to it.
you can pull off the tube, and place a push in breather in its place, or you can remove the valve cover, cut the tube shorter, and use a clamp on breather on the remaining tube. do not cut the tube while the valve cover is on the motor. you dont want lil metal bits making their way into the motor.
thats it

LOL here where I live in AZ the emmisions guys hardly know which side of the car your engine is in, let alone what it should look like!! I could probly roll up there with exposed rockers and (if I could still get it to work and pass emmisions) would be clear to go. LMAO!
Bruce (90RS305)
Ohh yeah, I just left the little thing on my header. Here in AZ during the summer its too hot and an open element is anti-productive, so that way I can put the old assembly back on and get colder air...
