fuel relay problem.

alright, maybe somebody can help. this is a 92 rs 305 tbi

my car has trouble starting. it starts every time, but it takes like 20 cranks everytime. its always the same. i took off my air cleaner to watch the fuel injectors while a friend cranked it, and the fuel was just dripping out slowly. now once the car fires up the fuel sprays just fine. the car drives like it always has and it has the same response. now im not exactly sure what it could be. would getting a new fuel filter fix this? im sure it hasnt been changed in ages. or am i losing pressure somewhere? and what would cause that. thanks for any help.

I just recently experienced extended cranking time in my 91 RS 305 TBI. It would take 2-4 tries when cold. It was the fuel pump relay (located on driver's side firewall) in my case. $16 at a local Chevy dealer. It took about 30 minutes to replace.

Have you tried disconnecting the fuel pump relay while the car is running? Does the engine shut off?

well, recently my friends dad replaced the fuel pump relay, but it was still doing that. takes 2 tries when cold, but its easy to start after its warm, he thought it was a pressure problem somewhere. guess its not the fuel pump relay.

- ill try disconnecting it, what is it supposed to do?

Have you tried checking for any "trouble/error codes"? My car was throwing a code 54 - fuel pump circuit (low voltage).

If fuel pump relay, the extended cranking time is due to allowing time to build up enough oil pressure to close the oil pressure switch.

If the engine keeps running when you disconnect the fuel pump relay, it probably is not the fuel pump relay. If engine shuts off, it could be a faulty oil pressure switch.

Maybe others will chime in with their knowledge and experience. I would be looking at fuel pump relay, oil pressure switch, fuel filter, fuel pump, and starter.

Let us know what you find out.

What would cause a faulty fuel relay? Just over time?

Well, did you change the filter? I'm on my second one, and still no change. As soon as my 1st check clears though, I am out to purchase a new CTS. Mine has the extended cranking time and it's starting to run really rough until warmed up a bit.
