TBI-open air element results
Just wanted to share experience of swapping out my stock air cleaner assembly on my 91 RS 305.
Last nite got antsy and started reading thru all sorts of links and happed upon Pablo's open air element guide.
Very linear and easy to understand. I went to PepBoys and picked up a 14in open air cleaner assembly from Edelbrock for 70.00 and installed it this same day.
Granted, there were dirt clods on my K&N that i had in there, and a cap from a quart of oil that i must have dropped in there a while back .... but after switching to this open filter, i saw a substantial increase in throttle response and overall performance. really really nice. another plus was when i was doing the swap, i found the culprit of my oil leak!
just my 2 bits.

he didn't get ripped if he got the finned aluminum Elite series... I bought 2 of them with the K&N filter, they were both $80. I did buy the triangle breathers instead of the round ones, I think the round ones are around $65 normally so $70 isn't too bad, but the round ones don't come with the K&N filter.

RESPONSE TO THE THE IGNORANT INDIVIDUALS:
I bought the Edelbrock Elite Series aluminum air cleaner, the round one, WITH the filter.....69.99 @ Pep Boys....a very fair price
BTW, this post was about the results, not the cost of the cleaner assembly

TBIfly, I did notice a difference as well. It felt and sounded a lot better. I could really tell a difference when I hit passing gear.
BTW I was agreeing with you as far as price goes. I only wanted to buy a breather once, I didn't want to have to replace the cheapo $15 breather every year when the chrome starts rusting and flaking.

Jag, I appreciate your comments, rather than those who just poke at the misfortune or ignorance of others rather than adding some helpful information.
What I like as much as the power increase, is that sound it makes when you get on it a bit...as if you were sucking really fast thru a straw, seems as if the air is just aching to jump thru that filter. Using an open air setup, you really can hear the abundance of air availble. The other bonus is getting that gnarly air duct/dryer hose/stock assembly out of the engine compartment.
Next to pretty things up with a polished Vortec manifold to match some new 64cc vortec heads I plan on buying.

Brody,
to your last comment.
Example: do you buy a running car with an LT1 for $500....or do you wait around so you can get it cheaper?
(this is a rhetorical question, please, no more comments)

Brad, I havent really considered it much til you mentioned it. I just wanted an open air element and the Elite series was all that was available at the time.
I think I WILL get the Elite Series valve covers too, after I throw on the vortec heads/manifold.
If I get past the shame of the look of my engine, I'll post pics.

Do you guys know what size the tbi base is? You know the round opening at the bottom of the air cleaner. I don't know if all open air filter assy. will fit tbi will it?

Id imagine that some can be different.
Most catalog/store bought open air assemblies are the same as stock (the base of them that is, where the assembly joins the throttle body/carb, or the spacer.
On mine, the only mod I had to make was to pull the MSD Blaster coil off, and remove the brackets on it, so that I could bend one of those brackets at a tighter angle (normally 90*, but I bent it to roughly 50*). I then replaced the modified bracket back on the coil, turned the coil around and installed it 180* from original....I did this so the wires going into the coil would not rub and ultimately arc against my new assembly (since aftermarket assemblies dont generally leave lee-way for that coil).
Ultimately, go to Pepboys or Kragen or whathaveyou, pull off your stock assembly, take it inside and eyeball their products to see if they match, better yet, measure it, and bring your tape measure with you to the auto parts store.
Your real concern should lie in the hood clearance. You know it will fit if, when you place the assembly ( base, filter, and then lid) atop the throttle body, you still have some of the post visible that secures the assembly. If you use a 3 inch element you will be fine, maybe even 4...maybe.

I've been meaning to get an open-element air cleaner, and that looks like the ticket. Is that one Jegs has for $49.99 the same one PepBoys has for $70? Is the filter it comes with a stock one or a K&N? Also, what's the link to Pablo's guide? I'm sure putting on a new air cleaner assembly is easy enough, but a walkthrough would be helpful since I've never done it. Thanks!

There was a guy on ebay that sold a new basic 14x3 chrome air cleaner for $5.50. I was outbidded in the last minute. That blows. That was a good deal.

When you switch from stock to open air element. What do you do with the vacuum line and other goodies plugged into stock air cleaner? My summit air cleaner and K&N are on the way via eBay.

Plug the one not needed, and drill a hole, or knock out the hole for the sensor...That is it.

Chill out. They're all right, so how are they ignorant? I bought an Edelbrock #1207, chrome top with logo, same filter, same size. Like 25 bucks after tax and it looks nicer IMO. Guess im ignorant.

Re: TBI-open air element results
Hey i know this is an old thread but i bought an edelbrock open air filter the one thats like $30 from autozone not the elite series but it was to tall for the screw since the top was curved i was short by a couple cm's. Another brand open air filter i got reached the screw but rested right on my coils. Does the elite series air filter screw in with out a problem and if so does it clear the coils? This is the one im thinking of trying next. http://www.autozone.com/selectedZip,.../selectZip.htm If it makes a difference i have a 92 camaro rs. Im getting tired of going back and forth to autozone for something this simple....

Re: TBI-open air element results
It's a drop base filter with a throttle body spacer under it. (You can see it in the picture if you look for it)
It BARELY fits under the hood, it's ripped up the foam matting above the wingnut, but no metal-to-metal contact at all.

How much better does a open element flow then a dual snorkel air cleaner with fuctional cowl induction "trans am hood" ? ....... Just curious is all.

What's the absolute width and height I can go with on a Open Element for a L03 with stock hood?

Re: TBI-open air element results
hate to bring up an old thread but i figured it would be better than starting a new one, especially considering the topic... what did you all do with the stock air cleaner stud to make it clear the new filter. the one that comes with the air cleaner i bought is straight and is off center unlike the odd shaped stud that comes stock. can anyone help?

Re: TBI-open air element results
and hey guys, what do u think of like a generic air cleaner from jeg's? they go for like $25, if they increase ANY performance... then why not?
