Some track times! I need to go FASTER!

ok, just went to the track yesterday. It was hot as hell out. I keep the fan on between runs to keep her cool. I made 4 passes before I got tired. The has the following mods:

*3" dual cat cack American thunder exhust. Right now there is a 2.5" pipe coming out of the cat then it switches to a 3" back. I bought the dual cat setup that I was planning on converting to once I got headers for it.
*K&N air filter
*metal piece around the TBI unit in the air filter removed.
*9 bolt from a 86 T/A that has posi and 2.77 gears
*B&M rachet shifter.
*Goodyear Eagle GS-C 245/50ZR16's
*Lakewood control arms/traction bars(tration bar was removed because it made driving on the street a rough ride)

I had no problem hooking at all. This car really lacks the torque I want.

here are my times in order:

RUN #1:
R/T 1.106
60' 2.627
330 7.447
1/8 11.301
MPH 64.53
1000 14.593
1/4 17.409
MPH 79.88

RUN #2:
R/T .736
60' 2.514
330 7.210
1/8 11.008
MPH 65.44
1000 14.265
1/4 17.039
MPH 81.24

RUN #3: - RED lighted
R/T .476
60' 2.767
330 7.640
1/8 11.637
MPH 62.50
1000 15.004
1/4 17.863
MPH 78.82

RUN #4:
R/T .729
60' 2.527
330 7.292
1/8 11.149
MPH 64.52
1000 14.438
1/4 17.284
MPH 80.03

So you all know, I did a oil change like 2 days before, changed the plugs, cleaned the K&N and other little BS.

These #'s seem about right. I'm sure I could have gone about 16.6 with better weather and some better driving.

What do you think I should do next? I want to get osme 3.73's but I hear they are $$$ for 9 bolts. I'm going to do my own custom ram-air which i have all the pieces, just need to do it. I have a friend that can burn proms, but need to find/get a good bin. I'd liek to put a shift kit in.

Spacer - not sure which size to get?
I also want some good headers(EM legal) - what are good ones?
A nice big cam(no stall required, EM legal) - ???
intake and heads - I've always likeds the vortech heads, not sure which intake to get.

MY stock 4banger mustang(SVO motor) runs low 15's to high 14's. I need this thing ot catch up!
New TBI - Turbo city has one and so does holley, which is better?

start with the little things. go to the tech articles and do the ultimate tbi mods and diy afpr. put about 6 moree degrees fo base timing in it too.
soem gear will make a huge difference, but like you said, 9 bolt parts are mad $$$$. you may be best served to find a 10bolt housing or do all the upgrades to your stock one if you still have it(tech article about beefing up th e7.5 inch 10bolt)
also, try to carbon clean the intake. that crap reduces flow a lot if it has been left to build up for many years.
don't bother with a spacer, look for an intake. spacers are just a patch solution for a lack of intake volume. an edelbrock performer tbi, or performer type intake(low rise dual plane) with an adaptor will work good.
for a cam in a 305 the most popular choice is the stock LT1 cam. they can be picked up for cheap and provide a huge performance gain over stock.

later

I went 15.22 at 90.07 with:

3.42 gears
open hedman shortys
open element 10x2.5
raised FP
some tranny work (kit,servo,boost valve)
and a fiberglass cowl hood
+ a few tiny little things that probably didnt do much

I'd recomend ditching the 2.77 rear. Hold out on doing headers. They make everything else under the hood a pain to work on.

After the gears, do an intake.

After that it gets into serious engine work that requires lots of tuning. *ask me how i know*

For the begginer, all the stuff above is pretty simple.

If you want some better ideas, here's what i just finished:
lt4 cam, vortec heads, powerplus intake, 670 TBI with stock injectors.

Car: 88 Camaro SC
Engine: SFI'd 350
Transmission: TKO 500
Axle/Gears: 9-bolt w/ 3.23's
(whOdi beat me to it... oh well...)
in addition to new cam and intake some new heads would make a HUGE difference. Those swirl port heads are power robbing peices of junk. That and a nice 670 holley tbi to replace the crap 400 cfm stock one will help alot. I cheated... I just bought a 1300 dollar gm goodwrech engine. I just didnt have the motivation to sink time/$$$ into my old 305. The car itself does an estimated 15.1 1/4 mile, which still isnt good enough to warrent going to the track to find out for sure.

mods:
2 peice 350 (Has the junk cam and crappy heads that came with it)
Performer intake w/ tes headers

all the rest of the stuff is stock, still has the stock muffler, a 700R4, and the 2.73 open diff rear that specializes in leaving unimarks when it peels out.

The gears really hurt, I wouldn't go less than 3.23 ratio. Headers are a good investment in performance, just make sure you aim for ones that make plug access a good amount easier else you'll be kicking yourself at the next spark plug change.

Minor do it yourself porting on the heads and intake can do wonders for performance and is easily done yourself. When you do have the cash, dropping in new heads, cam, intake will give amazing results in terms of both hp and torque. The stock tbi is good to around 250-275 hp then with some minor modifications maybe 300 hp. After that its 670 tbi time.

I met one of the early tbi modders on this board in person, palric, who had a decent 13.9 tbi setup back almost 10 years ago, which was well before parts were widely available. He was doing it on the 2.73 differential so you can imagine the power he must have made on that 305 to get 13.9.

The lowdown on mine:
91 RS, 305 with 220,000 miles
Edelbrock TES, 3 inch pipes, no cats, Flowmaster
3.73 posi, turbo city adjustable regulator.
with a 120 horse nitrous shot mine runs 13.80's on drag radials with a stick.

go with the juice and have some fun.

those 60' marks are very slow, I can pull 2.3-2.4 all night, I'd say that is one of your biggest problems

yeap, I want to do gears first. The car is just a dog off the line. I need to find some cheap 3.73's for a 9-bolt setup . I'll probally goto the track in the next few week and I'll let you all know my new times. Someone drop me a e-mail if you have a good deal on a 9 BOLT gear setup.

If you can pull off low 60 ft 2.2 range then you can possibly hit 16's easily...

traction plays a big key in the 1/4 mile.

i own a mostly stock 89 RS with the t-5 in her, she runs low 15.00 all day long, with the stock 3.08 gears and stock exhaust. Her only mods at the track were the B&M Ripper short throw shifter and increased fuel pressure along with advnaced timing.
