water temp. thermostat fro Chevy 250 L6 560 cfm TBI system

Hey folks, I was wondering what water temprature thermostat one would recommend for a chevy 250 straight six, an engine that was originally not meant for EFI? I have a 195º thermostat right now.

Unfortunaltey right now I don't have an electric fan.

For now, if I were to run a 180 thermostat, would that greatly affect the ECM's readings from the water sensor? I'm assuming 160º is too low? Cuz man, the 195º thermostat gets pretty fudging hot under the hood. But right now, I just can't afford an electric fan.

The six is runnin' a Howell universal system 560 cfm twol barrel.

Thanks HOMETOWNS for the help a....CHEVYTOWN

What is the bore and stroke of the 250? Could it be used for any high performance applications?

it's bored .30 over...not sure about the stroke...it's stock compression. I believe it was meant for a high performance application.

You do? Last time I checked the 250 I6 was used as a base engine for C/K pickups...I think they outfitted it with a 1bbl carb and it was quite the dog. Is this motor any different?

The crank (rotating assembly) is from a 74 nova. Not sure about the block. Balanced and blue printed to stock compression. Ported cylinder head with extensive work on bosses. 1.94 intake valves. All crane on the valve train. Clifferd 4 barrel manifold and shorty headers. Howell universal system 560 cfm.

My buddy has a 78 Camaro LT, it has a 250 I6. He was gonna bore and stroke when he rebuilt it. He got a 292 crank, but it didnt fit - not enough deck high. So now he's stuck building a "high performance" 250 (+.05" bored). His had a 1 barrel, and yup - quite a dog, he could barely even chirp the tires... um, i wanna say more about it...but I cant think of anything inparticular. Someone ask something - maybe I can ramble on about something else!

oo, oo - thought of something
His head and intake manifold were one piece....

I'd run a 180 stat. That temp stat isn't a problem with stock GM proms. It may be a problem with Howells proms, you'll have to ask them.

Do you have any flowbench numbers for that head? I'm really curious what he was able to do with the intake ports. They seem very compromised from the factory.

porting pics

I did the porting myself bro. I decided not to go for the bossless deal. I wanted to keep it cuz one day I'm gonna supercharge the engine. I want the boss to help split the air/fuel mixture into each intake valve respectively. I tried mimicking an airfoil from a TPI setup. I'm going for velocity of the air as opposed to more air mass.

It took the dyno numbers upstairs man, I was suprised....That was a kewl deal a.

I agree...GM engineers were a 'lil stoney when they designed this cylinder head.

I think the 195 would be now problem. In fact most EFI cars now come with that from the factory. They are designed to run that hot. Of course your 6 was designed in the 30s so... Maybe 180 would be better.....

Like that caddy intake setup you got! Getting ready to do that to my 9c1 Caprice one of these days. Also glad to see someone doing a I6.

Those I6s from GM were a great motor. OK no real powerhouse from the factory. But have you ever seen one blow up?? I haven't. They just go and go and go. Oh they start blowing blue smoke after while. And they will get to a point where you check the gas and fill the oil to drive the 5 miles to town.....Their great advantage is torque and alot of it at idle to 2500rpm. They aren't usually a high revver. Which from the picture you're in a jeep or a truck? So that sounds like a good combo...

63 C10

It's in a 63 C10 stepside.....If I had a jeep, I would have gone with the 292 and would have stroked that mothafoa!!! However, I know of a fella who has a roller camshaft on his 250 and tops the RPM upstairs 'round 7,500 (street driven). That's all I had to hear.......Cheers HOMETOWNS....CHEVYTOWN

The I6 is a great engine to build into a high rev'er (if ya got cash) cuz it has 7 main caps for 6 cylinders (vs. a V8's 4 caps to 8 cylinders)... or so I'v heard....

open and shut case

aight HOMETOWNS....it's an open and shut case!

I called Howell and they told me that my problem was the throttle stop screw (for lack of a better term on my part). I adjusted it like they told me and darn....what a difference. I originally thought it was my water temp sensor, since the intake and headers are so close to eachother, I thought the headers were heating the sensor on the intake an "extra bit" along with the 195º, I assumed it was running lean. Man, it runs like a dream a....I'm sold on Fulies....
Wonder what the numbers gonna be now...it rocked with the Holley 390.....But I can already feel the power benefits from EFI....I'm sold HOMEBOYS! CHEVYTOWN
