Is the hypertech chip good at all?

a guy i know has a 92 RS 5 speed and he just ordered it...hes gonna have his "machanic" install it. He knows nothing about his car and wont let me do anything to it even tho i obviously know something. anyways does the chip help at all? i think the only good feature is that it allows you to keep the car running way cooler. how will it affect the TBI?

I sent HyperTech an e-mail a couple of months ago requesting clarification on what settings the chip changes and when...

The bottom line is that the only time that the computer settings vary from stock is at WOT (Wide Open Throttle). Based on this, I didn't waste my money.

People in school talk about "chips" all the time. I just laugh and watch them waste $200-$300 to have some generic piece get put in by a shop mechanic who's usually doing brake-pads. Ahhh i love not being totally car-ignorant!

I put in a hypertech chip today and the car sounds better for some reason *shrugs* The car doesnt seem to want to die anymore. Plus I got it for free. So hey its all worth it in my case.

You have to syncronize it by shifting to 5th gear first then down to reverse. I thought everyone new that But still sometimes it will still grind a little, but only sometimes (at least in my case)

Yeh - people can be dumb like that. They should start a board on this site for stupid-car-stories. I had a guy tell me yesterday that he wants to build a 438, which (when i prompted him as to whether its a stroked 400) he replied, "yeah, its the biggest motor you can fit in the car without any problems" - I suppose if you overlook the massive price tax, fuel complications, and the fact that he has the stock 700R4 and rear end, its definitely the easiest way to go!!! Dear oh dear....

Sadly they've been turned to the dark side, but at least they see the power of the force!! Any other stories guys??

Obviously. Tell him to save his money. Unless he's willing to burn his own (which if a mechanic has to install an eprom, it's probably beyond his scope)...his best bet is to just make some "mechanical" changes, like alter the base timing and read up on adjusting the fuel pressure. Trust me, it will probably do more and be a hell of a lot cheaper.

this guy is dating a friend of mines sister and hes seen my car alot and ive smoked him a couple times now and he still wont listen to me. ive done quiet a bit of stuff to my car myself just he wont even trust me to install a 14x3 open element or anything...i told him with 150k he needs a tune up but noooo. he wants to keep this car VERY original because someone has beat it into his head that the 25th anniversary RS is gonna be worth ALOT of money someday. i payed 2k for a car with less miles and it better overall shape than his. he paid 5500$ with body damage yeah his is a few years newer but its the same exact car...his doesnt even have the high rise spoiler

Pray that your sister and him don't ever get married. If the guy won't even let you help him tune up the car, then he really isn't all that bright.

He's so dumb he'll probably swear on a stack of bibles that his car is FASTER with that "off-the-shelf" Hypercrap chip.

he looked under my hood and about lost his mind...he said "what size engine is that it looks smaller than mine" duh since ive removed SO much crap from under there its no wonder. It took me awhile to get him to believe it was the same thing he had. I told him i could make his look like that but he was like "well i wanna keep this car original because its gonna be worth money"
i was like alright whatever.

Yes, but not for a very long while. And there are a lot of other "models" that will probably be worth more money sooner, like convertibles and 1LE.
