Ran car w/o oil!!
Ok, I just got back from my military tour in germany and started to work on my car the next day. I was doing two things at once(installing my cat and changing my oil) and I guess got carried away. I had already drained my oil when I finally took my cat off, I wanted to hear how my car would sound with just open headers so jumped in and started it up forgetting to whole time I had drained my oil and ran the car for about 8 seconds just at idle with a coulpe of rev's. My question, did F&%k something up! And should I get it checked?

I guess if it was me I would put some oil in it and run it for a few minutes and see what happens. If it seems ok then I would drive arround the block a few times to see what happens. IMO if its not making a knocking noise I would leave it alone and drive it.

It's been a couple of days actually and I see no problems but talking with one of my friends he acted like I just shot my own son so I freaked out. I hope it's alright,

a buddy of mine has a z71 pick up and he got his oil changed at a stiffy lube and they didn't but the oil back in, he drove around for like 3 months with no oil and the oil pressure gauge was jumping around(why he didn't know some thing was wrong is beyond me) so he takes it to the dealer saying his gauge was broke lol the mechaince starts to wokr on it and says there is no oil in your truck. there was no damage to the truck and it ran fine the whole time. 8 seconds of running with no oil wont hurt your motori wouldn't be to worried.

I agree... 8 seconds with no oil in an engine that previously ran with oil in it will not do any harm. Now, on the other hand, if this had been a fresh rebuilt motor and fired up for the very first time with out oil in it... well.... Can we say MAJOR WEAR on the new parts!?!?!!
Don't worry about... you're not the first nor the last person to do something like that. No damage is done to worry about.
Just don't do it again!!!!

Mike

no its not possible to drive 3 months without ANY oil.i kid i worked with at a chevy dealership left oil out of a lumina and it seized right up within a few minutes when he took it out for a ride.had to have a whole new motor put in.
so NO 3 months with no oil is impossible.no if,ands,or buts about it.

3 months? No, no, no
Sorry, not possible
If his oil pressure gauge was jumping around then there must have been some oil in there (at least a quart)
Your 8 seconds likeley did not hurt anything. It takes probably twice that to remove all the oil from the bearings. If it is not knocking then your good to go.

At a swap meet last year they had a Chevy V6 (2.8 I think) on display that they had been running nonstop without oil. They were up to over 400,000 miles and the engine was running fine. I bet a Ford couldn't do that

i purposly blew up three motors. I drained all the oil out and ran them at wot. 2 of them were cast iron, they both took more than an hour to seize. the other was a cadillac aluminum block, it seized after about 11 minutes i think.
I've also known plenty of people that just plain forgot to put the oil back in after an oil change and drove around for a few days like that. They were fine.
I wouldnt worry about it, unless you're hearing odd noises or something. An iron block can hold alot of oil in its pores. Unfortunatly aluminum blocks wont hold any oil at all, so they'll seize up almost immediatly if they run out.
