Coiled wire around brake lines
What is the deal with that wire? Does it just prevent the line from rubbing agaist something so it doesn't burst? Is it really all that important?

I think it serves two purposes, one as you said for rubbing ad vibration. The second is incase if it is handled rughly and bent, it won't kink as easily because the wire wrapped around it won't let it flatten out easily.

I've heard the same thing that Andy has. And it kinda pisses me off that you can't find pre-bent lines with that sheild on it. I guess we have to make them ourselves out of SS wire? Man, what a pain...

I have the solution to this problem. I have prebent stainless steel brake lines with the spiral wrap. I have had them custom made for me. As of now I only have the prebent lines for the disc-to-drum conversion. I have stainless flex lines too.
Getting these lines correct so that they will actually "bolt on" has always pissed me off too. So I went to the trouble of having them custom made. Then fitting them, them sending them back till I got it right. They now bolt on as if they were made at the factory production line. They fit perfectly.
If you are interested let me know. I have several sets of these.
