Steering Wheel slack fix?

Does anyone know of a rebuild kit for the steering columns or what the cause is for the slack/slop in the steering wheels? i can move the steering wheel slightly left and right but the tires dont move at all...

This has been the case for a long time now and now that the car is nearly done i'd like to get this fixed.

I have all new components from the firewall forward including steering shaft and a manual rack so i know the slack/slop is somewhere in the steering column. The steering wheel is also new.

I want to get that new car steering feel back if at all possible. Any thoughts/suggestions would be helpful.

Re: Steering Wheel slack fix?

Slack is most likely from the rag joint at the bottom of the steering shaft, just before the box. They deteriorate over time, and become very loose and cause slack in the wheel. You can get a new rubber disk at autozone in the help section, just need to drill the rivets off the old one, and install new bolts.

If you tackled this already and still are not satisfied, you could eliminate the rag joint all together and swap in an astro van, or jeep steering shaft. Eliminates the rag joint all together.

Re: Steering Wheel slack fix?

I need to get a closer look. I dont have the factory rag joint anymore. I'll post up pics when i get a chance to get in the garage. With the Spohn manual rack and pinion setup i just have a couple universal joints and solid steering shafts. Seems like the slack is coming from the connection at the rack but didnt get a close enough look.
