moog tie rod ends rant

My 87 camaro has been set up with all moog pieces and custom tie rod sleeves. I can't get the toe towards toe in so I figured my sleeves are too long. They are longer than the other aftermarket ones like umi & hotchkis and pretty much whatever brands there are (most are about the same or damn near identical)

anyway, I was going to replace the tie rods on my 88 camaro and figured I would assemble the whole deal first and then adjust them so they are close to the old stuff that came out and then do the alignment (I have my own aligning setup but I don't want to build it all up so I'll go to a shop w/ a state of the art setup and do it there)...that's when I found there's a problem with these tie rods. they are considerably longer than the stock ones, by as much as a half inch or more. The inner one also has a sort of bulged end before the threads start (like a quick start end) that makes it even worse. Guess I will have to cut them down.

Why on earth would these things be longer than stock and as such limit the amount of toe in you can set, if you can reach to in at all.

Re: moog tie rod ends rant

You guys are killing me!!! lol. I ordered umi c/c plates to find 30 seconds later the thread on the failed ones. I'm getting ready to go POR15 all my new moog steering linkage, swaybar (stock), A-arms and spindles (also stock) and now i find this. I have to get this car together by monday the 22nd to go the the body shop to get the frame welded where it cracked behind the steering gearbox. I don't need any more set backs!!!

Anyway now that i got that out of my system, how much toe in are you capable of with things as is. i plan on running toe out 1/32 or maybe 2/32. I guess I'd be more concerned if you weren't able to reach 0 toe. Probably a good thing they are long that way there is more tie rod in the sleeves, sounds better and safer to have that much more bite holding the inner and outer tie rods together. BTW i have QA1 HD tie rod sleeves. Nothing is installed. Thats the plan for this week.

Re: moog tie rod ends rant

I have no idea how much I can get but I'm not chancing it, in fact...I have a feeling it won't go beyond some minimal toe out. 0 toe is useless, I want a little toe in for stability. 265 tires on the front pull into ruts enough as is.

I'm going to cut these down to the exact same length as the stockers. Stock with a crappy split sleeve has held up fine, these will be fine with a fuill tubular sleeve...more than fine.

I have to wait weeks for these parts! With all the expenses this crap should jump out of the box and install itself ... grrr

Also have to modify the shock covers somehow since they don't work with the founders CC plates, I may do it like I did on my 87 and that is sleeving up the top of the cover by about 5/16 so the sleeve takes the load and not the cover (since the top will not fit flush into the bearing housing) and I refuse to run without some kind of cover. That's what makes those bilstein shocks nice...the boots that come with them
